  1. Problem solving straegies

  2. Draw a Diagram • Drawing a diagram is a problem-solving technique in which students make a visual representation of the problem. For example, the following problem could be solved by drawing a picture:

  3. example • A frog is at the bottom of a 10-meter well. Each day he climbs up 3 meters. Each night he slides down 1 meter. On what day will he reach the top of the well and escape?

  4. Work backwards • By applying the working backwards strategy, students find the solution to a problem by starting with the answer and using inverse operations to undo the steps

  5. example • Brady was trying to decide when to get up in the morning. He needs 45 minutes to get ready for school. It takes him 25 minutes to drive to school. He wanted to get to school 20 minutes early to use the library. If school starts at 7:30, what time should he get up?

  6. Find a pattern • Finding a pattern can be a very helpful method for solving some problems.  Look at how the numbers are changing.  Are they being multiplied?  Is there a number being added to get from one number to the next?  Once you determine the pattern, you easily determine what comes next.

  7. example • Sophie has written a number pattern that begins with 2, 4, 7, 11, 16. If she continues this pattern, what are the next four numbers in her pattern?

  8. Write a Number Sequence • Equation and inequality are numbersentences. • Read the problem and write the number sentence needed to solve

  9. example • Jenny has 7 marbles and Kenny has 5.  How many do they have together? Write a number sentence for this problem.

  10. Drawing a Table • Make a Table is a problem-solving strategy that students can use to solve math word problems by writing the information in a more organized format.

  11. example • How many hours will a car traveling at 65 miles per hour take to catch up with a car traveling at 55 miles per hour if the slower car starts one hour before the faster car?

  12. Guess and check • "Guess and Check" is a problem-solving strategy that students can use to solve math problems by guessing the answer and then checking that the guess fits the conditions of the problem

  13. example • Of 25 rounds at the regional spelling contest, the Mighty Brains tied 3 rounds and won 2 more than they lost. How many rounds did the Mighty Brains win?
