  1. Karen Women's Organization (KWO) Presentation on Overall Works and GBV Updates in Summary For KDHW Data Collection Meeting, Hpa-an 6th June 2018.

KWO Organization's Background • KWO is a community-based Ethnic Women's organization. • Established in 1949 and restructured in 1985. • Empowered women in our communities, provided services which are not available otherwise, built our capacity to advocate for our rights • Active in all seven Karen refugee camps along the Thai-Burma border and in seven districts of Karen State within Burma.

  3. 63,000  members throughout the Karen State and refugee camps in Thailand. • Managed and run by elected Karen women throughout the Karen refugee camps and in Karen State. • KWO provides leadership and support to the community as a whole, particularly women, children and supported the most vulnerable within the community as they arise.

  4. KWO Vision: In a federal Burma, all communities have gender equality, the protection and promotion of indigenous people’s rights, human rights, and justice. KWO Mission: KWO is an ethnic women’s community-based organization that empowers women so they have capacity and power to solve their own problems and participate in decision-making that will affect their lives. KWO participates in the struggle to stop all kinds of oppression of women and of children and provides support for communities in the Thai-Burma border and in Karen State, Burma.

  5. KWO GOALS Ensure that KWO is an organization which is strong, sustainable, effective and healthy. Karen women are free from any kind of oppression and enjoy an adequate standard of living. Karen women have gender equality in all spheres of life at all levels. Karen women are encouraged to participate in political leadership at different levels and work together to achieve federalism. In our community, our people, especially women and children, can practice and enjoy full indigenous rights.

  6. KWO Values: Support equality. Show mutual respect. Know duty, responsible, accountable and share roles. Strongly support community ownership. Zero tolerance to any kinds of violence against women and children. Honest and committed to work. Uphold and promote the use of democracy system.

Organizing and Information Program: , Capacity building, Camp support , Resource Centre, STAND UP • Education Program: KYWLS project, SE project, Nursery School KS, Nursery School camps, Dormitory KS, dormitory camps, unaccompanied project • Health Program:  women’s health and TBA, women’s health and baby kits • Social Welfare Program:  safe house and women protection, strengthening women survivors, Women’s Empowerment, income generation KWO four main programs

  9. The Main Activities of KWO’s SGBV Safe House and Women's protection. Strengthening women's survivors. Women’s Empowerment and Income Generation Advocacy

  10. Safe House & Women’s Protection • Safe Houses in 7 camps and 4 in Karen State • Service provision to victims of SGBV. (in Safe Houses and at home). • Review of KWO’s SGBV Case Management Manual • Training: Counseling , Safe House Management and Networking • Advocacy: “16 Days of Activism” Campaign, etc • Release Report on “SGBV Cases and Justice Outcomes” • Provide Awareness raising to community on SGBV • Publication: Poster, pamphlet, booklet • Monitoring and Evaluation

  11. 2. Strengthening women's survivors. • Provide counseling through training. • - Provide capacity building trainings. • Collect stories • Building up information • Build up the women's survivors movement.

  13. 4. Advocacy • Review of ARM/SOP • Consultation with community • Helping with Case advocacy and case management • Reviewd Kaw Thoo Lei law and gave recommendations for changes related to women and child protection issues • Work together with WLB for CEDAW shadow report.
