  1. What We Know Pastor Nathan Weller March 10, 2019 Series: Conclusions

  2. 13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the • Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. • 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we • ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we • know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we • have the requests that we have asked of him. • 16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to • death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who • commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to • death; I do not say that one should pray for that. (cont’d) • --1 John 5.13-21 ESV

  3. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death. • 18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does • not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, • and the evil one does not touch him. 19 We know that we are • from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. • 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given • us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; • and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the • true God and eternal life. • 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. • --1 John 5.13-21 ESV

  4. 1. To worship and serve God • 2. To rule over creation in God’s name • (Genesis 1:26-28)

  5. 21For although they knew God, they did not honor him as • God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their • thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming • to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the • glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man • and birds and animals and creeping things. • --Romans 1.21-23 ESV

  6. “Whatever controls us is our lord. The person who seeks • power is controlled by power. The person who seeks • acceptance is controlled by the people who he or she wants • to please. We do not control ourselves. We are controlled • by the lord of our life.” • --Rebecca Pippert--

  7. Right worship gives you right direction for your life

  8. 13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the • Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. • 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we • ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we • know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we • have the requests that we have asked of him. • --1 John 5.13-15 ESV

  9. Right worship gives you • a healthy relationship • with God and yourself

  11. Life only has meaning/I only have worth if...

  12. God never promised to tell me why everything happens the • way it does. But he did promise me that anytime I wanted • to talk, he would be happy to listen. And in a world where so • many people feel they are all alone, that's a pretty great • thing to know. • --Daniel Taylor--

  13. Right worship gives you guidance • on relationships with others

  14. 16If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit • sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; • I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, • but there is sin that does not lead to death. • --1 John 5.16-17 ESV

  15. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your • faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers. • --Luke 22.32 NIV

  16. If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life... • --1 John 5.16 ESV

  17. “All of us would be wiser if we would resolve to never • put anyone down, except on our prayer list.” • --D.A. Carson--

  18. Right worship shows you • how to have a healthy • relationship to the world

  19. 18We know that everyone who has been born of God does • not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, • and the evil one does not touch him. 19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. • 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given • us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we • are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true • God and eternal life. • --1 John 5.18-20 ESV

  20. 14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. • 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, • but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom • we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs— • heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with • him in order that we may also be glorified with him. • --Romans 8.14-17 ESV

  21. 31If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not • spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also • with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any • charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine… (cont’d) • --Romans 8.31-39 ESV

  22. …or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For • your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded • as sheep to be slaughtered.” • 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through • him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be • able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. • --Romans 8.31-39 ESV

  23. “We know that the Son of God has come and has given • us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and • we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ.” • --1 John 5.20 ESV
