  2. Bridging boundaries Why transboundary cooperation in adaptation? • Prevent negative impactsof unilateral adaptationmeasures in riparian countries, therebypreventing potential conflict • Enablemoreeffectiveandefficientadaptationthrough: • Wider knowledgebase • Larger planningspace: takemeasures in thebasinwheretheyhaveoptimumeffect • Possibilitytosharecostsandbenefits Transboundarycooperationreducesuncertaintyandcosts!

  4. The transboundary pilot projects

  5. Promoting Cooperation to Adapt to Climate Change in the Chu-Talas Basin The project aims to: improve the adaptive capacity of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan; support dialogue and cooperation on the needed steps to design an adaptation strategy in the transboundary context and thereby prevent controversy on the use of water resources. Activities: Basin-wide modeling of possible changes in water resources and elaboration of joint scenarios, Preparation of joint vulnerability assessment, Development of a package of possible adaptation measures and relevant procedures for the Commission

  6. Example of project results: Expected changes in average precipitation in the basin in 2050, compared to 1961-1990 Вероятное изменение количества осадков в среднем по территории бассейна к 2050 году (%) относительно периода 1961-1990 гг.
