  3. More Present-Tense Verbs • A verb in the present tense must agree with the subject of the sentence. • Both the subject and the verb must be either singular or plural. • Follow these rules to make a present-tense verb agree with the subject:

  4. Add –es when the subject is singular noun or he, she, or it. • Press + es = presses • Jackie presses a seed into the soil. • Watch + es = watches • She watches the seed grow. Do not add –es when the subject is a plural noun or I, we, you, or they. The students press seeds into the soil. They watch the seeds grow. Rule 1:Verbs that end in ss, ch, sh, zz or x

Change y to i, and add –es when the subject is a singular noun or he, she, or it. • fly + es = flies • A robin flies to the oak tree. • Do not change y to i or add –es when the subject is a plural noun or I, we, you, or they. • Robins fly to the oak tree. Rule 2: Verbs that end in a consonant and y:

  6. The students_________ the signs of spring. (discuss, discusses) • My nose _____ from pollen in the air. (itch, itches) • Baby birds _____ in their nests. (hatch, hatches) • Many families _____ to do spring cleaning in April. (try) • Six family members _____ in old clothes. (dress) • Grandma _____ a broken curtain rod.   7. A verb in the past tense tells about an action that already happened. • The students elected a class president. Past-Tense Verbs

  8. Add –ed to most verbs. • help + ed = helped • All my friends helped Will. Past-Tense Verbs Rule 1:

  9. If a verb ends in e, drop the e and add –ed. • Vote + ed = voted • The students voted on Tuesday. Past-Tense Verbs Rule 2

  10. If a verb ends in a consonant and y, change the y to i and add –ed. • Hurry + ed = hurried • They hurried to the voting booth. Past-Tense Verbs Rule 3

  11. For most verbs that end in one vowel followed by one consonant, double the consonant, and add –ed. • Stop + ed = stopped • Our regular schoolwork stopped for the election. Past-Tense Verbs Rule 4
