  1. Leukemia By: Christina Maluchnik

  2. Leukemia • What I already know • What do I want to discover • The story of my search • My search results • My growth as a researcher • My works cited

  3. What I Already Know • Leukemia is a type of cancer • Leukemia starts in the bone marrow • Its soft tissue inside most bones • Bone marrow is where blood is made

  4. What do I want to discover? • How can leukemia kill someone? • Can leukemia be treated? • What is leukemia? • Who gets leukemia? • Where at in the body is leukemia? • Can leukemia spread through the body?

  5. The story of my search • At the library I found out what plagiarism was • Then I picked leukemia to do my research on • Next I found out what power library was • After that I found out how to do a liner power point • Finally I did research on leukemia

  6. My Search Results • Cancer of the blood cells • Starts in the bone marrow • Soft tissue inside most bones • Bone marrow is where blood cells are made • Healthy: • Bone marrow makes: • White blood cells, help your body fight infection. • Red blood cells, carry oxygen to all parts of your body. • Platelets help your body clot. • Having leukemia, the bone marrows start to make a lot of abnormal white blood cells called leukemia cells. They don’t do the work of normal white blood cells, they grow faster than normal cells, they don’t stop growing when they should.

  7. My Search Results • Treatment can be complex depending on the types of leukemia and other factors. There are strategies and resources that can help make your treatment successful. • A cancer of the leukocytes (white blood cells) arises in tissues where blood cells form, chiefly the bone marrow and spleen. • Normal function of white blood cells: fight invasion by foreign microbes and viruses. When they become cancerous they are no longer able to perform their normal functions. Huge numbers of the abnormal cells may accumulate in any of the bodies organs properly. • Mature white blood cells develop from stem cells ( often referred to as blast cells) in the bone marrow, possibly a mutation, or change in 1 or more genes the usual orderly process of cells division usually goes away when this happens, the leukocytes begin to multiply without restraint, this type of uncontrolled cell division is typical of cancerous process.

  8. My Search Result • Types of Leukemia: • White blood cells can be classified into 1 of 2 groups: Granulocytes and Lymphocytes. Leukemia can be classified depending upon which group of leukocytes gave rise to the cancerous cells. If the stem cells that give rise to granulocytes become cancerous, the disorder is termed myeloid, or myelocytic, leukemia. If the stem cells that generate lymphocytes become cancerous, the disorder is termed lymphocytic leukemia. Either form of leukemia may be acute or chronic. Acute leukemia develops suddenly and progresses rapidly; many young blast cells are found in the blood. Chronic leukemia begins gradually and processes slowly. In these cancers a greater proportion of the cancerous cells are from mature cells.

  9. My Search Result • Leukemia is a type of cancer that has afflicted people and animals for thousands of years. Leukemia was first discovered in 36B.C-450A.D that once remained in a skeleton. Other ancient evidence of leukemia comes from bone marrow deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) extracted from a 15 hundred old mommy found in the Atacama Desert of Chile scientists discovered that there is a virus in the DNA that is now known to be associated with a type of leukemia called Adult T-cell leukemia. • Doctors defined it as cancer id the cells from which blood is formed. When cancer prevents the blood cells from functioning properly the most prominent result is the uncontrolled growth of white blood cells, also known as leukocytes. Leukocytes are mainly responsible for fighting infections such as viruses, bacteria and fungi. Along with combating other invaders, like cancer cells. Each day the healthy human body generally produces 10 billion new white blood cells, which generally live for 1 to 2 days.

  10. My Search Result • 3 types of Leukemia: • Lymphocytes, the smallest white blood cells are the major disease fighting cells and come in 3 varieties called B cells, T cells, and NK cells. B (Bone Marrow) and T (thymus) cells are the bodies first line of response to contact with potentially dangerous substances known as antigens. B cells produce antibodies to attack these antigens, and type of T cells called a helper T cell releases certain chemicals that stimulate B cells to make these antibodies, thus helping the B cells begin their cells.

  11. The growth as a researcher 3 things I found out about leukemia: Leukemia is a cancer Can be treated Leukemia is a cancer that mainly is in the bone marrow and spleen When white blood cells become cancerous they are no longer able to function properly.
