  1. Safety Kevin Kruemp. (Safety Captain) “Safety rules are your best tools” “Safety doesn’t happen by accident”

  2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Safety glasses Long pants No loose clothing, strings on sweatshirts Hair tied back Close-toe shoes (no sandals, clogs, etc) Ear protection Gloves

  3. “Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is self defense”

  4. Acting Safely • Sleep!! (caffeine is not a substitute) • Clean workspace: everything has a place • Put things away when you are done using them • If you don’t know how to use a tool, ask a mentor to teach you • Don’t hang around the workshop or pit if you don’t have something to do

  5. Proper Lifting Technique Lift with your legs, not your back Communicate with other lifters to establish how you will lift and where you want to go Keep your back straight Don’t twist your body- use your feet if you have to Use proper handholds- make sure you have a stable grip before you start - make sure you grab something strong and smooth

  6. Proper Lifting Technique “Lifting’s a breeze when you bend at the knees”

  7. Power Tools • Pay attention to what you are doing • Plan your work before you start • Know how to use the tool properly! • When others are using power tools, don’t distract them • A mentor must be present • Don’t leave a machine on and unattended • Don’t leave hot tools or materials where other people might touch them • drill bits, freshly cut metal, soldering irons • Keep cords out of the way • Work away from yourself

  8. Hand Tools Never use a broken tool Use a tool ONLY for what it was intended to do Work on a table! -not in the air or in your hand Be careful with knives and blades Be careful not to “talk with your hands” while holding something

  9. “Don’t be a fool, use the right tool”

  10. The Workshop Fire extinguisher First aid kit Emergency contact binder All in pit Keep work areas ventilated

  11. “Safety doesn't slow the job down- mishaps do”

  12. The Robot Never stick your hands into the robot when it’s turned on Make sure everyone stands back before you enable it When practicing driving the robot, keep it away from people Use proper lifting technique

  13. Batteries • Any battery that looks damaged is unsafe to use • Contain sulfuric acid- it will burn your skin on contact • A battery is not safe to use if it is dropped • Even when it looks okay, there might be a crack that could cause the battery to explode • Pick up the batteries by the case, not the wires

  15. If a battery explodes or leaks • Battery disposal kit • Gloves • Bicarbonate of soda • Leak-proof container • Notify mentor and safety captain immediately! • Seek medical attention if needed

  16. Travel • Buddy system • Curfew • Cell-phones • Team contact information • NEVER GIVE OUT A TEAM MEMBER’S PHONE NUMBER TO A NON-TEAM MEMBER IF YOU ARE ASKED • Private information is PRIVATE • Sleep!

  17. Other team safety No last names of students on the website or anywhere else Proper adult to student ratio Background checks If an accident occurs or ALMOST occurs, tell your safety captain immediately even if you don’t think what happened was important

  18. Thank you!
