CODATA WG on eGY.Objective The objective of the Working Group (WG) is to promote the establishment and usage of modern and open data access standards and help to develop efficient ways to achieve interoperability. The WG will promote free and open access to metadata exchange and integration worldwide. Vision. That we have an Earth and space science information commons for the benefit of scientists and society as a whole.

  2. CODATA WG on eGY.Scope The WG will be concerned principally with Earth and space science data. The latter is data relevant to Earth system studies (e.g., solar, planetary, and solar-terrestrial phenomena), and remote sensing. The WG will promote metadata exchange and integration worldwide for such data, and include metadata for analogue information. 13-14 March 2008, eGY Summit, Rome

CODATA WG on eGY.Functions • Functions of the WG. • Provide an international framework and forum for Earth and space science informatics activities, with emphasis on bringing together people from around the world with common interests • Contribute to the development of interoperability methodologies • Provide a mechanism for continuation of eGY principals and activities beyond the end of eGY in December 2008 • Broaden the scope and effectiveness of eGY results • Collaborate with national and international bodies with informatics agendas to promote greater cooperation. • Liaise with the proposed IUGG Commission for Earth and Space Science Informatics to develop a complementary work program. (IUGG provides good access to the Scientific Associations, and the Geounions; CODATA provides good access to a broader informatics community and ICSU. eGY considers that both bodies are needed to get the best result.) 13-14 March 2008, eGY Summit, Rome

CODATA WG on eGY WG Focuses in 2007 – first part of 2008 ° Promote eGY principles ° Promote practical aspects of eGY worldwide with special attention paid to - data acquisition and handling matters - creation of national and international products dealing with Earth sciences data studies in fundamental and practical purposes ° Develop historical studies on IPYs, IGY and eGY ° Actively collaborate with incoming IUGG Committee on eGY and other relevant structures and initiatives ° Propose an official Task Group on eGY to CODATA 13-14 March 2008, eGY Summit, Rome

CODATA WG on eGY Ongoing activities • WG meeting was held in Suzdal, Russia on 19 September 2007 on the occasion of international conference on eGY • Proposal on creation in 2008 of an official Task Group on eGY has been submitted to CODATA • WG web-site development • Selection of eGY showcase products to make them available through WG web-site • WG future plans and time-table of meetings is established • Collaboration with IUGG ad. Hoc. Committee on eGY • Preparations of final eGY 2009 international conference for Europe and CIS started with active participation of the TG 13-14 March 2008, eGY Summit, Rome
