ICSU (The International Council for Science) • Founded 1931 • Secretariat in Paris • Merger and expansion of: • International Association of Academies • International Research Council • Universality of Science (non-discrimination and equity) • Recent name change from International Council of Scientific Unions, to current name 3

ICSU (The International Council for Science) (cont’d) ICSU’s Mission: In order to strengthen international science for the benefit of society, ICSU mobilizes the knowledge and resources of the international science community to: • Identify and address major issues of importance to science and society. • Facilitate interaction amongst scientists across all disciplines and from all countries. • Promote the participation of all scientists—regardless of race, citizenship, language, political stance, or gender—in the international scientific endeavour. • Provide independent, authoritative advice to stimulate constructive dialogue between the scientific community and governments, civil society, and the private sector. 4

CODATA (The Committee for Data) • Founded 1972 as a Scientific Committee of ICSU • Secretariat in Paris • Mission: • To improve the quality, reliability, management and accessibility of data of importance to all fields of science and technology • To promote and encourage, on a world-wide basis, the compilation, evaluation and dissemination of reliable numerical data of importance to science and technology 7

CNC/CODATA (The Canadian National Committee for CODATA) • Some early Committee activities in 1970s,1980s • Momentum lost due to staffing changes • Gordon Wood obtained records, resurrected the CNC in 1982 • Formalized the committee • Established Terms of Reference • Recruited Members and Observers • Held annual meetings (22 in total) • Positioned strongly within NRC • Solidified ties with CODATA • Served as both Chair and Executive Secretary (roles split in 2003) • Served as Secretary General of CODATA for maximum term 10

CNC/CODATA Objectives and Actions(a) To collect and reconcile the many views of its scientific community on relevant issues Action 1 Seminar on Access to Publicly Funded Scientific Data (NRC Partners’ meeting, May 2003) Participants: 55 scientists in different disciplines Format: Keynote speeches + Open Forum discussion Objectives: • Explore accessibility in Canada of publicly funded natural sciences research data; • identify possible deficiencies; • develop plans to address deficiencies. 13

CNC/CODATA Objectives and Actions(a) To collect and reconcile the many views of its scientific community on relevant issues (cont’d) Action 2 National Consultation on Access to Scientific Research Data (NCASRD) (Ottawa, November 2004) Partnership:Three major funding agencies in the natural and medical sciences Organization: Blue Ribbon Task force (meeting in June 2004) Participants: 70 invited scientists Format: National Forum (two days) Objective: • To help Canada maximize the value received from its publicly funded natural and medical sciences research by recommending an appropriate framework to facilitate open and long-term access to this research data 14
