  1. Sociology What is Sociology?

  2. What Assumptions Can We Make?

  3. What is Sociology? • Definition: The scientific study of social structure. • Does not focus on the individual • Focuses on the perspective of group or social level. • Looks for patterns in social relationships. • Challenges us to go beyond our assumptions.

  4. Relationships • Social Structure: the patterned interaction of people in social relationships. • Ex: High school • What are your relationships? Map out all the relationships in your life. Circle the institutions. (Family, Church, Law, School, Peers)

  5. A Social Science • Six Social Sciences: Sociology, Psychology, History, Economics, Political Science, and Anthropology. It is a relative new field. It is a “soft” science

  6. Sociology vs. Psychology • Young men join gangs because they have been taught by their society to be “masculine” • Teens commit suicide because of peer group expectations. • More women divorce because of a trend toward social equality. • A young man joins a gang to prove his toughness. • A teenager commits suicide to escape depression • A woman divorces her husband to develop her potential.

  7. Individual vs. Group • People’s behavior with in a group setting cannot be determined by their personal characteristics. • Ex. Hurricane Katrina • Conformity: all groups encourage conformity

  8. Sociological Imagination • The ability to see the link between society and self. • Connection: Personal lives and events in society. • Knowing how these social forces affect us can prevent us from being prisoners of it. • Ex. Drop out Rate for Minorities • In other words: we don’t live in a bubble!
