  1. Appearance of Trust in Regional, Co-operative Organizational Networks Ms. Siru Korkala University of Helsinki Palmenia Centre for Continuing Education siru.korkala@helsinki.fi

  2. Research question When systemic trust and personal trust are measured and classified, how do the co-operative networks in various development phases differ from each other? ”Systemic trust appears in relationships with abstract systems.” ”Personal trust appears in relationships with autonomic individuals.”(Seligman 1997)

  3. Research material and methods Networks • The Lohja Environmental Cluster • The Karkkila Environmental Cluster • Network of businesses and organizations, targeting to disseminate environmental knowledge • The LLL Project • Network of educational institutions Methods • Network analyses • Interviews • Queries

  4. The Lohja Environmental Cluster • Network is trusted as a system • Well-established interaction • Open atmosphere • Members do not compete with each other • Network has clear strategic goals

  5. Present co-operation (very often; quite often; occasionally) The Lohja environmental Cluster

  6. Positioning the members based on levels of trust and activity / The Lohja cluster Active Inactive Systemic trust Personal trust (1) Municipality of Lohja; (2) Kisakallio Sports Institute, ( 3) Peltomaa, (4) Rosk´n Roll - the regional waste company, (5) Enics Group, (6) The S Group, (7) Loparex, (8) Minerit, (9) Lohja’s entrepreneurs, (10) Fortum, (11) Hospital District of Lohja, (12) UPM, (13) Envimetria, (14) Lemminkäinen, (15) Nordkalk

  7. The Karkkila Cluster • Cluster is in early phase of development • Trust in network is of the personal kind • Members had relationships already from the time before the network was founded • Good example how building trust requires time

  8. Present co-operation (very often; quite often; occasionally) The Karkkila cluster

  9. Positioning the members based on levels of trust and activity / The Karkkila cluster Active Inactive Systemic trust Personal trust (1) Biofarm Oy, (2) Kerava Energy –corporation, (3) Moventas, (4) Helvar, (5) Municipality of Karkkila, (6) K. Suilo, (7) MeriMet, (8) Verax, (9) Karkkila Industry Service, (10) SEW Industrial Gears

  10. The LLL Project • ’Sparsely knit’ network • Trust in network is of the personal kind • Network of low density, the level of co-operation was generally vague • Organisations were practically mutual competitors • Personal relationships are emphasized • Formation of trust requires long and intensive interaction • During the project interaction was scarce

  11. Present co-operation (very often; quite often) The LLL project

  12. Positioning the members based on levels of trust and activity / The LLL Project Active Inactive Systemic trust Personal trust (1) Innofocus, (2) Economic Information office, (3) EVTEK, (4) LAUREA, (5) The vocational school of Western Nyland, (6) Work Efficiency Institute, (7) Sports Institute Kisakeskus, (8) Education Centre of Western Uusimaa, (9) Karkkila Learning Centre, (10) Karkkila Adult education centre, (11) Kirkkonummi Adult education centre, (12) Kisakallio Sports Institute, (13) Siikaranta Education Centre, (14) Sydväst vocational institution, (15) Sydväst education institution

  13. 100 80 60 47 39 40 15 20 0 The LLL project The Karkkila cluster The Lohja cluster Unconditional Trust (%)

  14. Densities of the networks

  15. The Lohja Cluster → Density 0,32 → Systemic trust The LLL Project → Density 0,15 → Personal trust The higher degree of densityin network, the more trust is based on the systemic level The less dense the network is, the more trust applies at personal level Network’s density versus trust

  16. Conclusions • One member (Kisakallio Sports Institute) is placed differently in two networks → supports the hypothesis stating that the density and the level of activity of co-operation affect the appearance of trust • Density of the Karkkila cluster almost equals with the Lohja cluster in the same stage of development • It can be assumed that the trust will develop to the systemic kind also in Karkkila → Must be validated with new measurements!

  17. Positioning the members based on levels of trust and activity Active Inactive Systemic trust Lohja Karkkila Personal trust LLL
