A Rescue Promised • A time of National Emergency – Aram & Ephraim threaten • The Prophet Isaiah (740-690 BC) brings a word from God: • A Call to faith and faithfulness – God will deliver them. • Unfortunately the people “rejected” God’s offer (Isa 8:6) • They chose to fear earthly kings, not the Lord Almighty (Isa 8:12-15) • God preserves a (small) group of faithful people (Isa 8:16-18)

A Rescue Promised … • The Solution: The birth of a Child • A “great light” in the darkness (v 2) • To shatter the “yoke that burdens them ... the rod of oppression” (v 4) • Called: “Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (v 6) • He will establish an eternal kingdom of “justice and righteousness” (v 7) • Jump ahead 700 years ...

A Rescue Enacted • God draws near to a simple peasant girl • Mary is living in Nazareth in Galilee • She is a distant descendant of King David, as is her fiancé , Joseph. • She is a virgin, but will give birth to a son, through the Holy Spirit • The Son to be born will be – • “Great” ... “Son of the Most High” ... called “Jesus” [meaning ‘God rescues’]

  5. 3. God Comes to Rescue • The prophet Isaiah promised Judah rescue – ... but the people wouldn’t believe • Mary receives an unbelievable promise (a virgin having a child) ... but she believes • My Story – God comes near to me: A gracious Rescue God’s Rescue – Greater than Gold!
