What does composition mean? Today, we are going to write a personal narrative composition. We are going to write a personal narrative composition. Composition means a piece of writing. Activate (or provide) Prior Knowledge Tell your partner about one of the best days you ever had. CFU Students, you already know that we can tell stories about ourselves. 2. Concept Development A personal narrativetells a story about a personal experience2. 2 something that happened to you • A personal narrative always has at least one character, you. • A personal narrative always has a setting or place where the story happens. • A personal narrative always has a plot, or series of events, that make the story interesting. • A personal narrative is typically written in the order things happen. Last, give your narrative a catchy title. Example: Keep Your Eye on the Sky! • Introductory Paragraph: • introduce • the setting • introduce the • topic • introduce the • characters •Define who the characters are; i.e., the narrator and his/her classmates I was in gym class when my teacher suggested we go outside and play softball. As we made our way out to the field, my stomach slowly turned into a giant knot of fear. Softball is just not my game. I have a knack for always getting hit in the head by the ball. It doesn’t matter where I’m standing. The ball just seems to find me. • Body Paragraph(s): • include details • about the situation • describe feelings • and actions • give details to help • the reader form a • picture of the • events (sensory • details) • may include a • problem you face My teammates gave me a glove and put me way out in left field. I didn’t complain. I just wanted to make sure I knew when gym class ended so I wouldn’t be left behind. • Concluding Paragraph: • describe the • events that end • your experience. • may include • how a problem • was solved • may include a • reflection on the • experience Nothing happened the first three innings. Well, things happened, but not in my little part of the softball field. I started daydreaming. The next thing I knew, I heard the sound of a ball whizzing through the air. I put up my glove to protect my head, and an amazing thing happened. I caught the ball in my glove! I was a hero to my classmates for the rest of the day. Not only did I catch the ball, but I helped my team win the game. And I learned something. I may not always see the flying balls that come my way, but I can always take a chance and try to catch one. My dad wanted to go from Southern California to Arizona. We had to cross the desert to get to Arizona. We were in the middle of the desert when suddenly, the car shut off! We had run out of gas! Here we were, in the middle of the hot desert, and not a gas station in sight. My dad’s phone was not working so he couldn’t call anyone. He tried to remember how far back the last gas station was but he couldn’t remember. He looked around to see if there were any houses that he could walk to, but there weren’t. He said that it would be too far to walk to the next town. He didn’t know what to do. Then, along came a police officer. The officer stopped and asked what had happened. My dad told him that he had run out of gas. The officer asked my dad if he had tried to call someone, and my dad told him that his phone was not working. The officer said, “Well, it’s too hot out here to wait for a tow truck, so I will take you and your family into the next town so you can call a tow truck.” My dad thanked him and we all got into the police car. When we got into the next town, my dad called a tow truck and they went out and got the car. When they got back, my dad paid the tow truck driver, said thank you, and then pushed the car up to the gas pump. He filled the tank with gas and we were able to finish our trip. My dad said, “That was one expensive tank of gas, and I will never let the car run out of gas again.” 4th Grade Writing Applications 2.1 Write narratives.
