  7. Introduction Hobart is old and degenerated and as a result will be bulldozed and rebuilt. You have been hired as a panel of 6 highly intelligent researchers to determine the best source of power for the ‘new’ Hobart. Your group decision must consider all physical, social, environmental and economical factors from the 6 perspectives represented.

  8. Power Sources to Consider The 6 experts will investigate the feasibility of the following energy types for Hobart: • Wind power • Hydro power • Nuclear power • Coal power • Solar power

  9. Individual Roles The panel consists of: • Social scientist • Economist • Environmentalist • Geographer • Industry representative • Engineer

  10. Social scientist • Social Scientists investigate the social and cultural impacts of the different types of power source. • History • Population groups • Impacts of infrastructure • Jobs • Risks Resources:

  11. Economist • Economists investigates the economic (money based) issues arising from each power source. • Jobs & employment • Economy Resources:

  12. Environmentalist • Environmentalists investigate all the impacts each power source will have on the environment. • Natural resources • Wastes • Infrastructure impacts Resources:

  13. Geographer • Geographers survey the physical landscape and environment to determine which energy source are appropriate. • Landscape Topography • Weather patterns and climate • Available natural resources Resources:

  14. Industry representative • Industry representatives consider the prominent local industries and how different power sources will effect them. • Natural resources used in industry • Conflicts with industry • Jobs Resources:

  15. Engineer • Engineers look at the design, materials and infrastructure required for each power source. • Roads • Power plant locations • Transport of power (logistics) Resources:

Group process • Each group member investigates the feasibility of each energy source representing their perspective and view point (role). • Each perspective is represented in a tournament prioritiser to present to the panel. • A democratic decision is made by the panel based on the view points (tournament prioritisers).

  17. Conclusions and assessment • Each group must develop a one page media report to present back to the class describing their decision, providing evidence and examples. • Individual students reflect on the group synthesis, democratic process and their own role and what they learnt. • Individual students also submit their personal research, tournament prioritiser and rationale of the view point of their role. • ***Remember: please include a reference list for all resources used.
