  1. Interning at D.C. Creative Writing Workshop Stories My absolute favorite part of my internship was attending the reading that was set up for the young writer. Not only did I get to see people I had helped write and perform their poetry read their pieces at a Busboys and Poets, a renowned arts Café, but I also got to read some of my poetry. Me reading a poem at Busboys and Poets Sharing the stage for this event was fun and what I feel was a really good learning experience for both myself and the students. The moment that they stepped on the stage, each student that I worked with became an artist and performed at levels far beyond their years. This reading was a great way for me to end my internship and it was truly inspiring. My Project This winter-term my project was interning at the D.C. Creative Writing Workshop. From the beginning I knew I would be expected to help teach middle school students about poetry and serve as a mentor during their free time. I did in fact do those things, but my project became much more multifaceted. Chyna, myself, Daisha, and Shanya Accomplishments I was able to go above and beyond my goals with the D.C. Creative Writing Workshop. During my final week there I was able to teach a writing exercise with a special education class in the school. This experience was extremely rewarding. Surprisingly, in the short time that I was there I became close with a number of girls by helping them to improve their poetry. It was very hard for me to leave knowing that I still had so much more to share, and learn from them. I was able to learn D.C’s metro system very quickly. The young staff members were very welcoming and I was able to spend recreational time with them outside of work. Me teaching an exercise in the special education class room Goals To be honest, I had only a vague idea of what I would be doing as an intern. One of my goals was to gain the permanent staff ‘s trust enough so I could eventually teach a writing exercise. I also wanted to connect deeply with at least one student. Some of my personal goals were to understand the D.C. metro system and to befriend the young staff members in the Creative Writing Workshop. Shayla and me working one on one
