  3. Witold Pilecki was born on the 13th of May 1901 in Ołoniec. At the outbreak of World War II he took part in the September Campaign as an officer of the 19th and later the 41st Infantry Division. Later on he began secret activity against the Nazi Germans in Warsaw. In September 1940 he infiltrated the Auschwitz camp with the intention of organizing a resistance organization there. Under the nickname of Tomasz Serafiński, prisoner no. 4859, he created a conspiracy organization which objectives were to inform the nation as well as the allies about thesituation inside the camp. Witold Pilecki was charged with treason of state and sentenced to death and loss of civil rights. Historical justice triumphed on the 1st of October 1990, when the sentence was revised and Witold Pilecki was pleaded innocent and the sentence of 1948 was recognized as illegal.
