Elements of a novel • Style • This is the way an author expresses his or her ideas. • Style is marked by the: • kinds of words used • Sentence structure • Literary devices used “Being bitten by a scorpion or even a rattle snake is not The worst thing that can happen to you. You won’t die. Usually.”

  12. Elements of a novel • Style continued • Similes: A figure of speech in which two unalike objects are compared using the words ‘like’ or “as”. “His mouth was as dry and parched as the lake.”

  15. Elements of a novel • Style Continued • To analyze the author’s style ask these questions: • Does the author use mostly short, simple words and sentences or long complex ones? • Is the writing loose and casual or formal or something else?
