  2. Use Context Clues • Context clues are hints within the text that will allow you to identify the definitions of new and unfamiliar vocabulary words. • There will always be at least 3 questions on your exam that ask you to define a new vocabulary word.

  3. Types of Context Clues • Definition: Readers use the definition in the sentence to understand the unknown word. • Some spiders spin silk with tiny organs called spinnerets.

  4. Types • Example-Illustration: Readers use an example or illustration to understand the unknown word. • Toads, frogs, and some birds are predatorsthat hunt and eat spiders.

  5. Types • Contrast: Readers understand the unknown word because it is compared or contrasted with another word in the sentence. • Most spiders live for about one year, but tarantulassometimes live for 20 years or more!

  6. Types • Logic: Readers think about the rest of the sentence to understand the unknown word. • An exoskeletonacts like a suit of armor to protect the spider.

  7. Types • Root Words and Affixes: Readers use their knowledge of root words and affixes to figure out the unknown word. • People who are terrified of spiders have arachnophobia.

  8. Types • Grammar : Readers use the word’s function in the sentence or its part of speech to figure out the unknown word. • Most spiders moltfive to ten times in their lifetime.

  9. Multiple Choice Techniques • Read the questions BEFORE you read the story. • Know the type of question being asked: • Literal: answer found directly in the text. • Inferential: you must make inferences (assumptions, conclusions, judgments) to thoughtfully answer the question.

  10. Question Types • What color hair did the main character have? • Using the context clues in the text, what is the meaning of the word diatribe? • Why did the main character cry at the end of chapter 3? • Compare and contrast the personalities of the father and mother in the text.

  11. More multiple choice techniques • Use process of elimination. • Read every single choice before answering. • Know the common question types: • Author purpose • Context clues/ new vocab. • Theme • Very few recall questions! • Who or what would the author agree with? • Which does NOT belong.

  12. More… • Leave NO CHOICES blank. • If 2 or more choices say basically the same thing, eliminate them as options for your answer.
