  2. Expository Writing • Definition: inform, explain, or define (in other words, giving an explanation) • NOTE: very different from writing to PERSUADE.

  3. Writing Strategies • When you are given the Expository Essay prompt, be sure to read/underline key words. • Brainstorm: • For the Expository essay, your body paragraphs must include 2-3 examples from the following: • Literature (books, short stories, etc.) • History (battles, events, people, etc.) • Science (famous people, innovations, etc.) • Film (characters, plot lines, etc.) • Personal experience/observation • REMEMBER, don’t slip into narrative; keep your tone academic.

  4. Writing Strategies (continued) • Your introductory paragraph should start by interpreting or explaining the quote (put it into your own words). • It is okay to quickly go into your thesis (remember that you must have points A, B, and C in the thesis statement: these are your examples from literature, history, etc.)
