Formation of households from LFS data 3 basic types of households: Dwellings • sample unit, no dwelling level questionnaire • they are created from a different number of persons living together in a common flat • they are divided into one or more housekeeping units Households – housekeeping unit • the surveyed unit in LFS • they are created from a different number of persons with the same economic interest • they are divided into one or more census household Census (family or not-family) households • derivate unit in LFS • they are created from a different number of persons on the basis of the existence of a family structure

Formation of households from LFS data Two points how to define the census (family) household a) from the point of view of the individual • division of persons by their position in household (the unit of interest is the person) • living alone • living in parents couple (husband, wife, partners) • living with children (mother, father in one-parent family) • living with one or two parents (son, daughter) • living in non-family household (contains others persons that are not included into the preceding categories) b) from the point of view of the household type • looking for nuclear families, which determines individual types of household (the unit of interest is the household)

Basic characteristics of the formation of households from LFS data From the point of view of the household type • very low number of living together two family households in one housekeeping unit - relation to unwillingness to share a household with another family • decline of the number of persons per housekeeping unit between 2002-2008 • a higher proportion of households of individuals in comparison with to a lower proportion of two-parents households between 2002-2008 – it reflected the changes in the family life after the change of regime in 1989 • decline of the average number of dependant children in the household – putting off the birth of a child even after the marriage

Basic characteristics of the formation of households from LFS data From the point of view of the individual • Young persons postponed the decision to establish the own household at the beginning of the new millenium • in 2002 at age 25-29 years 19,3 % of women lived in the parent family, in 2008 already 26,4 % • in 2002 at age 25-29 years stayed 41,2 % of men in parent households, in 2008 already 47,0 % • Young people prefer living as an individual • in 2008 at age 25-29 years 10,2 % of men lived in one-person household, in 2002 only 6,7 % • Young people postponed the decision to establish the partners household even in their thirties • in 2008 at age 30-34 years 78,6 % of women and 68 % of men lived in the partner household, in 2002 only73,9 % of women and 59,2 % men
