  • In the early 1900s, it was believed that women suffered from “hysterical tendencies” because of their gender. The treatment was to lock them up in rooms for long periods of time, isolating them from other people.

  • What does the narrator mean when she says she “walks like she’s got oil wells pumping in her living room”? Why would that make someone angry?
  • What do the moon, the sun, and the tides ALWAYS do? Why is the narrator comparing herself to them?
  • Why would someone want to see the narrator “broken”?
  • Who might be offended or annoyed by this narrator’s attitude?
  • What does the narrator mean by “history’s shame” and “a past that’s rooted in pain”?
  • What is the narrator saying about her future?

Now that you have analyzed the poem, SYNTHESIZE the information to determine the OVERALL MEANING of “Still I Rise”—what is Maya Angelou’s message? How does the repetition of “I rise” influence the meaning?

Make sure you use EVIDENCE (lines and examples) from the poem to prove your analysis is correct!
