Texans want annexation Most Texans had emigrated from USA Texas heavily in debt from War Mexico still a threat-want US protection Americans Split on annexation Want land don’t want war with Mexico growing abolition movement does not want Texas in the Union as slave state U.S. Delays recognition

  6. Recognition • March 3rd 1837 • Andrew Jackson grants official recognition of Republic Of Texas • J. Pinckney Henderson Texas appointed foreign ambassador by Houston • J. P. Henderson arranged trade treaties with England and France

  7. Indians!!!

  8. Cherokee and Republic Of Texas • During revolution, treaties were made • Land rights recognized in exchange for peace

  9. Indian affairs • Treaties violated by ROT Congress- • pretended war-time representatives didn’t have authority • Texas settlers are moving West • big increase after revolution • They take Comanche lands

  10. Reprisal raids • begin 1836-1837 • most famous is on Fort Parker and Parker Farm • Cynthia Ann Parker-girl of about 12, captured with others in 1837.

  11. debt continues to soar because : • Interest on debt • spending continues • taxes are difficult to collect

  12. Texas Debt Soars Tex Congress wants to collect owed debts- Unpaid bills from Tex Rev. places • tariffs on imported goods • Taxes on property • Taxes on businesses • Fees on Land title registration

  13. Santa Anna’s “4 R’s” • Returns • Renounces • Refuses • Removed

  14. Released! • Nov 1836 Santa Anna back in Mexico- • delivered by R.O.T. Ship Invincible Boo!

  15. Renounces & Refuses Immediately • Renounces all promises to Texas • Refuses to recognize Texas independence OK, So I Lied?

  16. Removed! • Charged with losing Texas in Mexican court-Santa Anna is removed from office Nooo!
