  2. Problems In The Republic • Mexico & the U.S. refused to recognize Texas’ independence. • Therefore, Texas & Mexico were still at war.

  3. Death of Stephen F. Austin • Stephen F. Austin served as Secretary of State for 3 monthsbefore he died on December 1836, at the age of 43.

  4. Columbia, Texas • Before Sam Houston was elected, ad interim president David Burnet made Columbia the 1st capital of Texas. • However, many Texans felt the town was too small & isolated.

  5. New Capital of Texas • John & Augustus Allen built the city of Houston in honor of Sam Houston. • This became the new capital of Texas.

  6. Annexation Attempt • Annexation: To join together • Since most Texans had immigrated from the U.S., the majority of them voted for annexation to the U.S. • The U.S. blocked this move since Texas was a slave state.

  7. Financial Problems • When Sam Houston began his presidency, Texas owed a debt of $1 million because of the Texas Revolution. • All attempts to raise money failed.

  8. Native Texans • Native Texans began raids against settlers since they were angered by the growing number of Anglos moving into their lands. • Texas’ Congress also refused to ratify a treaty Houston made with the Cherokees.

  9. Texas Rangers • Sam Houston hired the Texas Rangers, a group of soldiers organized during the Revolution. • This group of soldiers controlled the number of Native raids in Texas.

  10. Election of 1838 • The Texas Constitution limited the 1st president to a 2-year term & no president could be elected 2 times in a row. • In 1838, Houston’s Vice-President Mirabeau Lamar won the election for President.
