  2. Meat Preparation: • Following the separation of meat from the bone of a cow (a process in which “pullers” are used), the carcass is soaked in a combination of steam, hot water and organic acids to reduce the levels of bacteria and prepare the meat for processing. • Meat preparation recommendations by A2Z EnviroConsultants: • We suggest that the energy required to heat the water is generated by solar power, which may reduce needs of electricity and gas at the abattoirs. • We suggest that a number of wastes left over after the meat has been obtained the bones be re-processed. This enables these waste materials produced to be turned into useful materials. In particular, we recommend that: • - solid food wastes, such as lard and tallow, be sent to be rendered and re-sold for human or animal use and/or consumption. • - faeces (solid wastes) and blood (liquid wastes) be sent for processing into garden fertiliser. • - solid faecal matter wastes be sent for waste water treatment.

  3. Packaging The current packaging for BrandX Meat Pies, made from oil and plastic, is commonly carelessly discarded by the public. This waste material is hazardous to the environment, and plays its part in increasing carbon emissions into the atmosphere. In addition, oil as a natural resource is unsustainable long term since it is a non-renewable energy source. Packaging recommendations by A2Z EnviroConsultants: • The Surround Solutions packaging company fund the new environmentally friendly packaging we recommend for BrandX Meat Pies. Our suggestion for the new packaging can be bulk collected and disposed of in a commercially run composting facility where it is turned into useful rich compost within 60-180 days. • We recommend using Surround Solutions because renewable food sources such as corn, wheat and rice are harvested into bio-based resin pellets through a polymerization process. The resin is then converted into useful, sanitary, single-use, biodegradable (breaks down in soils, water or air) foodservice items. This means there is less environmental impact than if oil is used as a starting point for producing packaging.

  4. Distribution The bulk of food transportation is carried out in large petroleum/ diesel/ gas powered trucks travelling by road. This creates gaseous wastes (air pollution) through the combustion (burning) of the fuel producing fine particles and CO2. Distribution recommendations by A2Z EnviroConsultants: • It seems incredibly fitting and essential that alternatives to diesel/petroleum-based fuels be sought urgently. We strongly recommend using biofuels in the large trucks responsible for the distribution of meat pies. • Cellulosic-based biofuels have the potential to lower the ‘global warming intensity’. The use of low carbon biofuels such as cellulosic ethanol or hydrogen fuel cells will considerably reduce the amount of carbon emissions in the atmosphere.

  5. Purchasing Our surveys have found that the most common methods of getting to the supermarket, milk bar, servo or corner store to purchase food by consumers is to drive, walk or ride a push bike or motorcycle. Purchase recommendations by A2Z EnviroConsultants: • We suggest, for those who live out of town or a considerable distance away from the nearest shopping centre, purchasing their product online. By doing this, the amount of carbon used and air pollution produced (in driving to and from the shops) can be reduced for the purchase of the product. • We also suggest that consumers be encouraged to purchase in bulk to save on use of resources (in packaging) and to minimise package disposal wastes.
