  1. Evaluate and Simplify Expressions SWBAT apply the order of operations to evaluate algebraic expression when values are given; combine like terms in algebraic expressions

  2. Review Some students are visiting a science museum. They pay $7 per student and a group fee of $25. Write and algebraic expression for the total cost of the trip. • $7s + 25 If there are 124 students going on the trip, what is the total cost they will pay for the trip? • $7(124) + $25 • $868 + $25 • $893

  3. Evaluate • 56 – p(q+r), when p = 3, q = 4.2, and r = 5.1 • (x+1)2 + y ÷ z, when x = 3, y = 8.8, and z = 4 • 15 + cj3, when c = 6, and j = 5 • (d + e ÷ 9)2 – 14f, when d = 8, e = 45, and f = 2

  4. Definitions • Terms • Parts of an algebraic expression that are separated by an addition or subtraction sign • Like terms • Terms that have exactly the same variable

  5. Combining like terms • 20n – 6n – 3 • 14n - 3 • 378 + 15y – 2y • 378 + 13y • 9z2 – 5z + 3z2 • 12z2 – 5z

  6. Simplify and Evaluate • 20n – 6n – 3, when n = 2.5 • 14n -3 • 14(2.5) – 3 • 20(2.5) – 6(2.5) – 3 • 32 • 378 + 15y – 2y, when y = 3.1 • 378 + 13y • 378 + 13(3.1) • 418.3 • 9z2 – 5z + 3z2, when z = 10 • 12z2 – 5z • 12(10)2 – 5(10) • 1150
