Evaluate and Simplify Algebraic Expressions

Evaluate and Simplify Algebraic Expressions. Section 1.2. Example 1. Evaluate. -13 2 (-13) 2. -169. 169. Example 2. Evaluate 3 m 2 + 5 m – 12 when m = -4. 3 m 2 + 5 m – 12 = 3(-4) 2 + 5(-4) – 12 = 3(16) – 20 – 12 = 48 – 32 = 16. Example 3.

  1. Evaluate and Simplify Algebraic Expressions Section 1.2

  2. Example 1 • Evaluate. • -132 • (-13)2 -169 169

  3. Example 2 • Evaluate 3m2 + 5m – 12 when m = -4. • 3m2 + 5m – 12 = 3(-4)2 + 5(-4) – 12 • = 3(16) – 20 – 12 • = 48 – 32 • = 16

  4. Example 3 • You are selling fresh-squeezed lemonade at a county fair for $2.50 per glass. You spend $180 to rent the stand and buy the ingredients and supplies you need. (a) Write an expression that shows your profit from selling g glasses of lemonade. (b) Find your profit if you sell 268 glasses of lemonade.

  5. (a) • Profit = 2.5g – 180 • (b) • Profit = 2.5(268) – 180 • = 490 • The profit from selling 268 glasses of lemonade is $490.

  6. Example 4 • Simplify the expression. • 12n – 7n • 8r3 + 6r2 – 9r3 • 15a – 8b – 20a + 14b 5n -r3 + 6r2 -5a + 6b

  7. d. 9(t – 4) – 6(t + 7) • 9t – 36 – 6t – 42 • 3t – 78

  8. Example 5 • Yesterday, a store sold 60 recordable DVDs. The Brand A DVDs sell for $15 each, and the Brand B DVDs sell for $12 each. (a) Write and simplify an expression that represents the store’s total income for the DVD sales yesterday if x represents the number of Brand A DVDS sold. (b) Then find the total income if 38 of the 60 DVDs were Brand A.

  9. (a) • Total income = 15x + 12(60 – x) • = 15x + 720 – 12x • = 3x + 720 • (b) • Total income = 3(38) + 720 • = 834 • The store’s total income for DVD sales yesterday is $834. • HW: pp 14-15 (16-56 mult. of 4, 58, 60, 62)
