  1. A Brief Introduction to Microfluidic Synthetic Polymers Charles Brooks ENMA 490

  2. Polymers to Know About PDMS PMMA PTFE PVC PVDF

  3. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) • [(CH3)2SiO]n • High flexibility (low Tg of 150 K) • High gas permeability • Hydrophobic • Used in soft contact lenses http://optochemicals.com/products/info_simply_easyclean.htm

  4. Poly(methyl methacrylate) • [CH2 C(CH3)COOCH3]n • Tg of 380 K for atactic • Low light absorption up to 260nm • Used in hard contact lenses

  5. Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) • [CF2 CF2]n • Tg generally around 240 K • Used often for nonstick and harsh chemical applications

  6. Poly(vinyl chloride) • [CH2CCl]n • Rigid (high Tg around 370 K) • Commonly used for piping in building applications

  7. Poly(vinylidine fluoride) • [CH2CF2]n • Resistant to chemicals and environmental stress • Piezoelectric properties • Flexible (high Tg around 238 K) • Used in fittings, valves, and ultrafiltration membranes.
