  1. Chemistry: The science that investigates the characteristics and properties of matter, including the changes that matter undergoes.

  2. Matter: Anything that has a mass and takes up spaceAll matter is made up of the elements found on the periodic table- elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances

  3. Atom: A single unit of an element

  4. Atoms are made up of SUBATOMIC PARTICLES • PROTONS • NEUTRONS • ELECTRONS

  5. ELECTRON CLOUD: describes the POSSIBLE LOCATIONS of electrons around the nucleus.

  6. Nucleus: Central Core of the Atom- it is made up of the protons and neutrons

  7. PROTONS: • p+ • POSITIVELY charged (+1) • Found INSIDE the NUCLEUS • Same mass of 1 neutron

  8. NEUTRONS: • n • NO electric CHARGE (0) • Found INSIDE the NUCLEUS • Same mass of 1 proton

  9. ELECTRONS: • e- • NEGATIVELY charged (-1) • Found OUTSIDE the NUCLEUS • The mass of 1,836 electrons equals the mass of 1 proton

  10. ATOMIC NUMBER: the number of protons in one atom. This different for every element.

  11. Elements of Life • 26 Elements found in living organisms, 6 of these elements (CHNOPS) make up 96% of the weight of living things

  12. Compounds: A substance that contains two or more chemically combined elements Example:H2O How many atoms of each element? • Hydrogen _________ • Oxygen___________ • NaCl • Sodium_________ • Chlorine__________
