Our Research • effectiveness of traditional Cultural Activities as a pedagogical tool within language learning in classrooms • uniqueness of Aboriginal Culture and benefits to traditional language • Weaving sentences through a hands on pedagogy to help create grammatical patterns, word structure and related vocabulary

  11. Results • Aboriginal style of music taught learners effectively. • It also allowed for looser acquisition of language. • Stress and tone patterns closely replicated fluent speakers. • Traditional Music, Language and Weaving created a sense of culture. • Attendance was increased

  12. Results • Aboriginal Cultural activities allows students to be more engaged and focused on their tasks • Allowed quicker transition through curriculum stages requiring an additional topic. • Using Traditional techniques whilst learning language kept students engaged.

  13. Students’ Comments • It was a fun learning experience. I liked the singing and the Weaving. • Singing is a millions times more fun than book work. • Using books gets boring, but you can learn by singing. I never knew that. • There is so much you can learn about culture that you don’t from books.

  14. Conclusions • Aboriginal Cultural activities can be used for second language acquisition within the classroom. • Aboriginal Cultural Activities are an effective tool to engage Aboriginal students. • Teachers should utilise Aboriginal Cultural Activites.

Conclusions • Strengthen Aboriginal identity – revive and sustain Dharawal language. • Inspire other community to prevent the extinction of language. • Inspire other communities to collaborate with Together Dreaming to build a Cultural Bank of resources for trading Old Ways in New Times. • Create economic flow and positive positioning for Capacity Building.

  16. Conclusions • Teachers should develop platforms to initiate teaching plans that incorporate quality teaching methodologies and professional frameworks utilising Aboriginal Cultural Activities.
