  1. Richard Louv Last Child in the Woods

  2. Some thoughts on Richard Louv WRITE THE NEXT SLIDE DOWN AND MEMORIZE IT

  3. Some thoughts on Richard Louv When to “ “ titles: • Poems • Song titles • Aricles/essays When to underline (if writing) or italicize (if typing): • Novels • Plays • Full length books

  4. Now look at your AP Prompt Is the title in “ “, underlined, or italicized? Take your time….

  5. It’s italicized!!!!! Last Child in the Woods That means what we have here is an excerpt (a little piece of a longer work). Even though it’s an excerpt, the name hasn’t changed. Italicize it (if you’re typing) or underline it (if you’re writing).

  6. Intros • Your intros are including the right information…. • But they’re a little…stiff. • Don’t forget to still incorporate your lovely voice in the intro.

  7. An example In the article, “Last Child in the Woods,” Richard Louv talks about the separation between people and nature. He wants people to expose children to nature as opposed to just technology. Parents overexpose their children to technology and are not exposing them to nature. People are loosing connection with the physical world. Technology has cause a separation between people and nature.

  8. Another Example In 2008, Richard Louv argued that children are becoming unaware of nature due to parents and technology getting in the way. Increasing advances in technology and advertising had caused a separation between people and nature. In this passage, Louv develops his argument about the separation between children and nature.

  9. Is there anything wrong with these? • No! • But they feel…stiff. Or static. • They are repetitive. • They repeat themselves. • That was a joke. • But seriously, just copying down the notes I type makes your introductions sound repetitive and choppy.

  10. How can I improve? Suggestion 1: integrate sentences OLD: In the article, “Last Child in the Woods,” Richard Louv talks about the separation between people and nature. He wants people to expose children to nature as opposed to just technology. NEW: In Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv discusses the separation between people and nature, suggesting that we find opportunities to limit children’s exposure to technology so that they can interact with the outdoors.

  11. How can I improve? Suggestion 2: Be specific. OLD: In this passage, Louv develops his argument about the separation between children and nature. NEW: In this passage, Louv laments the separation between children and nature, developing his argument through anecdote, hypothetical questions, and nostalgic imagery.

  12. How can I improve? Suggestion 3: Watch out for repetition of words. OLD: He wants people to expose children to nature as opposed to just technology. Parents overexpose their children to technology and are not exposing them to nature. People are loosing connection with the physical world. Technology has cause a separation between people and nature. NEW: In our modern world, parents have overexposed children to technology, which has resulted in detachment from the natural world.

  13. How can I improve? Suggestion 4: Open with your voice and creativity. OLD:In 2008, Richard Louv argued that children are becoming unaware of nature due to parents and technology getting in the way. NEW: In 1958, children used to stare out of a window at the great wide world. In 2008, children ignore the world outside and stare at a screen instead. In Last Child In the Woods, Richard Louv wonders how the children of 1958 turned into the parents of 2008 and worries about what will happen to a generation of children separated from the world outside.

  14. An example that incorporates creativity, but still hits all the rhetorical context: There was a time when children pressed their noses to the window to watch the world outside. Now they press their noses to an iPad screen to watch the world whizzing past them, a common practice Richard Louv laments in Last Child in the Woods. With a tone both critical and nostalgic, Louv warns parents against the growing separation between their children and the natural world, longing for the days of backseat boredom and worrying about the future of backseat distraction.
