  3. Learning Target I can identify significant individuals, events, and issues of the development of the cattle industry.

  4. SEE, THINK, WONDER

  5. Cattle Industry • The cattle industry in Tx. began when the Spanish brought cattle over from Spain. • Early colonizers like Jose de Escandón raised cattle along the Rio Grande on large ranches.

  6. Effects of Geography • For 150 years, the cattle industry grew steadily. • The physical geography of the area helped the industry to survive Read p. 362 to find out what kind of geography was good for cattle ranching.

  7. Physical Geography • Good water source • Good climate • Prairies or pastures full of grass The early Texas cattle industry grew in a diamond-shaped area bordered by the Rio Grande, the Gulf of Mexico, the Nueces River on the northeast, and an imaginary line on the northwest. The climate and geographic features of this area were well suited for raising cattle. The cattle could roam the prairies, grazing on the nearly endless supply of grass. Read p. 362

  8. Discussion Questions • From where did Texas ranchers get the first cattle? • Who helped to create the early ranches in Texas? • What geographical factors in Texas favored the growth of the cattle industry?

  9. Effect of the Civil War • After the CW there was plenty of cattle, but Texans had no $$$. • This situation created the beginning of the cattle industry • The industry would soon experience a boom.

  10. 1000’s of cattle roamed all over Texas No one in Tx needed beef (no demand) There was NO beef in the NE so… There WAS a need (a demand) for beef in the NE This demand created a market for beef in the NE Effects the Civil War…

  11. Discussion Questions • How did the Civil War impact the cattle industry? • What is necessary to make an industry grow? What caused the growth of the cattle industry in Texas? • How do you think Texans will get the cattle to the NE? The number of Cattle increased and this allowed people to gather cattle and sell them Its necessary to have grass, water and good climate. You must have a market and a product. The cattle rancher would hire cowboys to herd cattle to the RR. The RR would take the cattle to the NE
