  1. CASE STUDY SIX BY VINCENT O.OEBA MOSES SITHOLE SAGARY NOKOE AGNES ANKOMAH WIM BUYSSE ROGER KAMIDI BERNARD CHASEKWA

  2. Title • Field studies to evaluate the benefits on milk production of providing smallholder farmers in Kenya access to credit to allow shifting of concentrate feeding to early lactation

  3. MAJOR FEATURES • The study is clearly based on the previous one carried by Romney et al to fill the gaps identified • The study comes out clearly as longitudinal • Farmers who acted as controls in this study never provided all the information wanted hence making comparisons difficult, thus complicating the analysis by not giving out what the researchers expected. • The study clearly demonstrates difficulties encountered on researcher designed studies with farmer management.

  4. Major features contd.. • Pre-survey study provides more information on the ground unlike the post survey due to censoring data among other attributes • On data management in this study it will add value if the instruments used in data collection are attached among other enumerators notes • Results on impact assessment and adoptability have not come out clearly on this study case.

  5. Statistical modelling in enhancing research process • The model used in this study stands out to be okay even though farmers did not give out the information as was designed by the researchers • This case study could be used to demonstrate how to fit linearized non- linear model • In Genstat, using of non-linear models could fit well without necessarily carrying out the txs. • Also double exponential could fit well the model • Time spent in initial analysis a big lesson

  6. Suitability of the study • Study remains useful and relevant to livestock researchers • If the function fitted appropriately as explained in modelling it could very useful; yn = anbe-cn • Despite expectations of good fit, it might happen that the curve will boosted within the first few wks & quickly fall to an extent that the area expected for improvement ending remaining the same. • A new detailed resource material to be developed focusing more on the needs of young and old research scientists with varied case studies from NARS and international ones.

  7. Thank you.
