  3. What is this movie about? • The true story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who tried to save the 1,100 Jewish workers in his factory from the Holocaust.

  4. Who is Oskar Schindler? • a German businessman who opens an enamel works factory in Kracow, Poland, with the intent of making a fortune off of lucrative war contracts.

  5. Why Poland? • Poland was defeated in two weeks after Germany invaded in 1939.

  6. What, exactly, is the Holocaust? • Germany’s attempt to exterminate “enemies of the Reich,” including political enemies, Jews, homosexuals, Russians, Poles, and Slavs. • Over 11 million total killed, around 7 million Jews.

  7. Why Jews? • Traditional anti-Semitism in Europe • Originally religious differences; ultimately social/economic differences (Jews not allowed to own property, therefore dominant in business/law) • Hitler taps into anti-Jewish feeling in Germany; he does not create it

  8. Other Characters? • ITZHAK STERN: Jewish accountant, Schindler’s assistant; starts sheltering Jews from German army in Schindler’s factory • AMON GOETH (pronounced “gurt”) German commander of Plaszow work camp

  9. Is Adolf Hitler in the film? • No. The movie is set in Poland and Czechoslovakia. Hitler is never featured.

  10. Why is the movie in black-and-white? • The director, Steven Spielberg, wanted it to look like newsreels he had seen as a child. • There are three color scenes; beginning, middle, and end.

  11. The movie is not about American history. Why do you show it? • Remembrance of the Holocaust is a moral obligation for all people, regardless of nationality. • MY PERSONAL REASON: “Just a few thousand”
