  2. UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.   3. UNFPA supports programmes in four regions: Arab States, Europe and Central Asia; Asia and the Pacific; Latin America and the Caribbean; and sub-Saharan Africa. We work in over 140 countries, areas and territories through nine Country Technical Services Teams and 112 country offices. Three-quarters of UNFPA staff work in the field. Global Reach

What we do in the area of HIV/AIDS Priority Linkages: Learn HIV Status, Promote Safer Sex, Optimize connection between HIV/AIDS and STI services, Integrate HIV/AIDS with maternal and infant health SRH and HIV/AIDS linkages Condom Programming & RHCS Sex Work Country Priorities Women & girls Young People

  6. To establish and/or enhance Youth-friendly policies and programmes that: strengthen national HIV prevention efforts especially for youth in vulnerable situations; and empower young people to effectively participate in halting the epidemic. Objectives-HIV & Young People

Strategies/Activities • Strengthening youth-adult partnerships, including youth participation in national development processes • Special Youth Programmes • Highlighting issues & partnering at international events: UNGASS , High level meeting on AIDS 2006, Toronto IAC • Partnerships with youth organizations

Strategies/Activities • Strengthening evidence-informed advocacy in support of political and financial commitment to scale up effective HIV/AIDS interventions for young people • 33 country coverage study • Improving research & programmes on Very Young Adolescents • Improving programming for HIV prevention for young people

  9. Strategies/Activities • Developing evidence-based guidance, approaches and tools to enhance HIV prevention programming for young people • Programming guidance & strategies for UN Country Teams • Steady, Ready, GO

  10. Strategies/Activities • Strengthening a coordinated UN and partner response to HIV/AIDS and young people • Collaboration on wide range of events & activities • A strengthened IATT/YP at the global and other levels • Strengthening UNFPA’s lead role at regional and country levels

  12. Conclusion • UNFPA believes that in order to have any impact on HIV transmission • Youth must be at the core of decision making at all levels as equal partners • Vulnerable groups and YPLWA have to be involved • Gender norms and relations have to be addressed • Stigma and discrimination
