  3. Election of 1800 • A tie in the electoral college!! • Jefferson- 73 votes • Adams- 65 • Burr- 73 votes • House of Rep. has to decide- votes 35 times before finally electing Jefferson Aaron Burr

  4. Jefferson’s Ideas for America • Many talents: architect, musician, scientist, scholar, author • Wanted to end political fighting • A common way of life- a nation of small independent farmers • Not “Presidential” walked to appointments

  5. Jefferson’s Ideas for America • “Let us unite with one heart and one mind” • “Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle” • “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists”

  6. Politics Under Jefferson • Ended many Federalist programs • Decreased power of national gov. • Less taxes • Reduced military • Ended Alien and Sedition acts

  9. Louisiana Purchase • The “West” in 1800 • Appalachian Mts. To Mississippi R. • Mississippi is a key trade and transportation route • New Orleans is main trading port • Spain gives New Orleans to France in a secret treaty in 1800 • Port is closed to Americans

  10. Wheeling and Dealing with Napoleon • Jefferson offers to buy New Orleans • France asks if U.S. wants to buy ALL of Louisiana Territory • Napoleon needed $$ more than land • April 30, 1803 • $15 million- 3 cents per acre • Doubled the size of the U.S.
