  5. Storage Interconnect • Fibre Channel is used to move SCSI data/command from Servers to disk arrays and tape drive. • Very expensive dedicated fibre lines. • Distance limitation---10km? • New prosposals to carry SCSI over IP networks: • iSCSI • Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) • Internet Fibre Channel Protocol (iFCP) chow

  6. Differences in iSCSI, FCIP, iFCP • iSCSI: wraps SCSI data/commands in TCP/IP packets. Given full access IP management and routing. • Wireless retail, use Cisco/Nishan? Switch • Too slowuse TOE(TCP offload Engine, by intel, adaptec, ..). • IBM stop 200i iSCSI targe storage appliance development. • FCIP: move encapsulated Fibre channel data through “dumb” IP tunnels, which connect SANs. Cannot take advantage of routing and IP management features. • EMC, CNT, Pirus, SANcastle, SAN valley. • iFCP: wrap Fibre Channel data in IP packets but maps IP address to individual Fibre Channel devices. More stable? Allow routing and IP management. • Carlson uses Nishan multiprotocol switch (sole provider of iFCP). chow

  8. Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) • a set of management and Internet standard technologies developed to unify the management of enterprise computing environments. • The Common Information Model (CIM) specification is the language and methodology for describing management data. • DTMF’s WBEM web page http://www.dmtf.org/standards/standard_wbem.php • http://www.dmtf.org/download/presentations/TOG_management_web_services.pdf chow

  9. Storage Network Projects: Based on Input from Sarah Jelinek • SAN Management • Automated discovery, backup/disaster recovery, capacity planning, fault management (detection/isolation), hierarchical storage management. • Policy management and associated QOS • SAN Security • Hard zoning, virus?, access control, truested manager. • Intelligent Storage Switch (load balancing?, preferred treatment) • WBEM/CIM Projects • Building a distributed CIM object manager (CIMOM) • http://sourceforge.net/projects/wbemsource/ for WBEM open source projects. • Embeded WBEM/CIM infrastructure chow
