    1. Same ole’ song… Not much has changed!

    2. This is still the same…for the most part

    3. so is this…

    4. and this…

    5. And MOST IMPORTANTLY! When the parent can not produce any acceptable proof of residency as stated in section C(1) of policy 5.1: THE STUDENT SHALL BE REGISTERED IN SCHOOL A statement of Bona Fide Residence shall be signed by the parent for temporary enrollment. Acceptable proof of residence must be provided within 30 calendar days as defined in section C(1).

    6. The Bona Fide song & dance. In a “live-in” situation, the form must be signed by both parties & notarized. One primary proof is required in the name of the owner/lessee. Policy requires that the parent submit, within 30days, either a FL Driver’s License, ID or voter registration card.

    7. However, (now we get to the sour notes!) these requirements may exclude some families and we, by law, are not allowed to do that. For those families who are unable to provide either of the three required proofs we will accept documentation from any other government agency. If that is not an option then anything from column B of policy 5.1, section C. OR, if you can arrange for your School Social Worker to do a home visit and they are able to physically verify residency, this is sufficient.

    8. Home Education Hustle Home schooling is seen as the parent assuming ALL RESPONSIBILITY for their student’s education. The District does not assist in any way, we do not provide books, curriculum nor materials. Refer families to www.browardschools.com/homeed or the District Guidance office @ 754 321 2586. The appropriate withdrawal code is W24 & it is not necessary to receive a call from District Guidance before you withdraw the student. If possible, please provide families with the Notice of Intent. Broward Virtual is not home schooling. It is the District’s own full-time online public school. They accept/register new students in December & July. For additional information call Laura Pinto @ 754 321 1100.

    9. The Custody Battle Blues We are not attorneys, paralegals, or mediation experts! It is the parents’ responsibility to advise of any and all changes in custody, residency and emergency contacts. If someone other than a parent comes in to register a student they must show proof of custody. If the parent(s) live outside the Tri-County area, a signed, notarized letter identifying the person responsible for the child is sufficient. When in doubt email me the details and I will refer the issue to School Board Counsel.

    10. The low notes… CUMS – there is no District-authorized listing of what should be contained in the CUM. BonaFide Statements – confirm with your Guidance Director and/or Administration the extent to which these will be pursued. Policy does allow for withdrawal but the best interest of the student must be considered. Foreign student placement – Foreign Transcript Evaluation Guide available as a pdf.

    11. Foreign Student Placement

    12. Guide consists of 100+ countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Includes grading scale, grade equivalencies and compulsory attendance information.

    13. Points to remember: If students arrive with documentation of grade level, they are to go into that grade, regardless of age (there may be exceptions, contact District Guidance with questions). When records are not available, age may be used for placement. Students should be placed provisionally by a combination of age appropriateness, unofficial records and achievement tests. After the start of 2nd semester, students who enter from alternate calendars are to be placed into the grade recently completed until the end of the year and then promoted.

    14. The high notes… In Guidance, District policies 6000.1, 5.1, 5100.1 & 5100.2 are vital to operations. They are online at www.browardschools.com/sbbcpolicies.

    15. The high notes… Data Warehouse can be accessed within the District at web/dwh. To obtain a DWH userID and password, complete the User Online Form available at the Data Warehouse site in the FAQs.

    16. The high notes… You may also access Virtual Counselor from the DWH website. Follow the links to create an ID & password.
