  1. Reversible Reactions Reversible Reactions Manufacture of Sulfuric Acid Know and describe the stages in the contact process for the manufacture of sulfuric acid Know that vanadium (V) oxide is used a catalyst

  2. Reversible Reactions Bread Toast I can’t quite guess what that symbol means! I wonder what conditions would affect these reactions? Click on the thinking cloud to highlight the equilibrium sign H2O (s) H2O (L) Click on the detective twice Water Ice Click on the reactants Solid Wax Liquid Wax Hide instructions Show instructions

  3. Reversible Reactions • Sulfuric acid has many uses in industry. • The amount of sulfuricacid which a country uses in one yearcan be a measure of that country's economic development(how modern or wealthy it is). mmm.. My new task is in this letter. Well lets open it up and start on the first clue.... Click on the letter twice Click on the detective Hide instructions Show instructions

  4. Raw Materials Well without Watson even I know my task is to find out about the manufacture of sulfuric acid ... Watson.. Click on the air balloon and then on the piece of sulfur Detective... I have the following raw materials for you to identify.. Click the speech (I have the following) – click twice Click the slide anywhere until the speech (I have...)appears Hide instructions Show instructions

  5. Reversible Reactions Write a sentence to describe the reaction Write a Balanced Equation 1. Sulfur found in Fossil Fuels... Sulfur + oxygen sulfur dioxide S(s) + O2(g) • SO2(g) Great, well don’t wait for me lets see what happens... Not yet. We still have to balance the equation.. I have the Raw materials for you detective Success! • When sulfur in fossil fuels is burned it produces sulfur dioxide gas. Can you describe this detective

  6. 2. Sulfur Ores Reversible Reactions Can you finish the reaction.. Can you balance the reaction.. ... Sulfide ores are heated in airto produce the metal oxide and sulfur dioxide gas, for example.. lead sulfide + oxygen lead oxide + sulfur dioxide. 2PbS(s) + 3O2(g 2PbO(s) + 2SO2(g) Is there another way to make sulfur dioxide? Yes,....

  7. Reversible Reactions The sulfur dioxide gas produced from both of the above methodsis used to make sulfur trioxide • Sulfur is oxidised in the previous reactions to become sulfur dioxide. Both reactions are exothermic. There are conditions for this reaction... Write a balanced equation for the reaction.. sulfur dioxide + oxygen sulfur trioxide. 2SO2(g) + O2(g) 2SO3(g) And don’t forget that a catalyst is used called.... Vanadium (V) oxide But a)what is Exothermic b) How is the sulfurdioxide used

  8. Reversible Reactions • What does that sign mean! Does it effect the reaction In many industrial processes a compromise temperature is used . To reduce the problem one must look for a way of increasing the rate of a reaction without decreasing the yield i.e. with a catalyst. An increase in temperature is used to speed up chemical reactions but it can have an undesired effect when the reaction is reversible and exothermic. This is the sign for a reversible reaction. Pressure and temperature will have a big impact on the product yield, so in a reversible reaction it is very important to get it right! Vanadium (V) oxide WATSON! Stop daydreaming, I am about to explain the sign at the centre of our investigation... I mean reaction!

  9. Reversible Reactions A brief summary of the Contact Process The Contact Process: • converts the sulphur dioxide into... • ....concentrated sulphuric acid. • makes s.... • ... sulphur trioxide (the reversible reaction at the heart of the process); • ...ulfur dioxide To make this more difficult you could just show the starter sentence • converts the sulphur trioxide into.... Pupils must join up the correct start to the sentence with the correct end Hide instructions Show instructions

  10. Reversible Reactions Sulfide ores are heated in airto produce the metal oxide and sulfur dioxide gas Chemistry really is a lot of fun!! vanadium (V) oxide is used a catalyst To Summarize The sulfur dioxide gas produced from both of the above methodsis used to make sulfur trioxide Sulfur found in fossil fuels is used to make Sulfur Dioxide
