Probability. Probability is used when we have situations in which there is an element of uncertainty. Uncertainty can be associated with random experiments such as tossing a coin, throwing a die or dealing cards from a pack of playing cards.

  1. Probability Probability is used when we have situations in which there is an element of uncertainty. Uncertainty can be associated with random experiments such as tossing a coin, throwing a die or dealing cards from a pack of playing cards. Sample Space is the set of all the possible outcomes of a random experiment.

Examples When throwing an ordinary die and noting the score, the sample space is S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} If a card is dealt from an ordinary pack of playing cards, and the suit is noted, the sample space would be S = {hearts, clubs, diamonds, spades} If two ordinary dice are thrown and the sum of the scores on each die is noted, the sample space would be S = {2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12} Exercise 3.1 Mathematics Statistics Unit S1 - WJEC
