  1. ASHRAE Handbook Revision By: Society Handbook Committee ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  2. Who is involved? • TCs • TC Handbook revision subcommittee • Researchers -- research results • Speakers -- Published papers • Anyone else with good information • Society Handbook Committee • Liaisons to each TC with an assigned chapter ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  3. What is the ASHRAE Handbook Series? • Organization and presentation of the “best knowledge” of our industry • Product most desired by our membership • The “Bible” of the Industry • The “Standard of Care” ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  4. Where is this knowledge presented? • Print -- one volume per year • Fundamentals • Applications • Systems & Equipment • Refrigeration • Electronic • “eBook” -- 4 volume CD ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  5. Why do we keep revising the Handbook? • new information and experience • needs of users keep changing • correct and learn from mistakes ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  6. When do we revise the Handbook? • ALL THE TIME! • What ?!?!? • One volume is printed each year • TCs must start preparing for the next revision right away ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  7. What is new about revising the Handbook? • “eBook” published each year -- 4 volumes • Allows more timely corrections • Faster dissemination of new and important information • Flexibility for TC -- can make changes yearly if needed • errata included ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  8. How do we revise the Handbook? • TCs • Society Handbook Committee • Handbook editor ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  9. How does the TC Help? • Appoint a Handbook subcommittee • Be sure that they have a meeting - every time • Be sure that they are on the agenda and report their progress - every time • Give feedback to Subcommittee during drafting ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  10. How does the TC Handbook Subcommittee Help? • Free valuable time of the TC • Focus on the job without distraction • Summarize actions/needs for main TC meeting ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  11. What/Who helps the TC Subcommittee? • ASHRAE Handbook Author and Reviser Guide • TC members • Others with technical knowledge • Your Society Handbook Liaison • The Handbook Editor and Staff ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  12. How does the Society Handbook Committee Help? • Liaison between TC Handbook Subcommittee and the Handbook editor • Assist TCs in getting the chapter revisions completed on time • Relay needs of Handbook users to the TC Handbook Subcommittee ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  13. How does the Author and Reviser Guide Help? • Overview of Handbook • Revision procedures and guidelines • Style guidelines • Review checklist • Suggested outlines • Submission requirements ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  14. Overview • Philosophy • Thrust of each volume • For example ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  15. Applications Volume • Applications chapters provide information to help the designer use the equipment and systems described in other handbooks. They describe how equipment should be used and what to consider when designing • The information helps the system designer select and use equipment properly. It does not describe how to design components or equipment. ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  16. Applications Volume • These chapters describe the use of heating, air-conditioning, and ventilating equipment and systems to provide desired conditions. They address principles of operation and the effect of design parameter changes. • “They DO NOT re-describe/reformulate basic information found elsewhere in the Handbook.” ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  17. Procedures • Appoint TC Handbook Subcommittee Chair • Appoint members to the Subcommittee • Review chapter just published • use checklist as a guide • Decide on revisions needed • Revise and submit ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  18. Review Guidelines • Get other people involved! DO IT NOW! • TC members -- Corresponding members • Others with technical knowledge • People who are less familiar • Reviewers for parts of chapter OK • HB subcommittee chair organize and summarize ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  19. Review Guidelines • Everyone on the TC read the Revision Guidelines and Checklist in the Authors guide -- before you start to review! • Look for relevant material in: • past Handbooks • maybe old info is now relevant • ASHRAE Transactions • Journal articles ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  20. Review Guidelines • Look at chapter critically • Does it fit with philosophy of Volume? • Does it contain information described better elsewhere? • Is your description better? -- work with the other chapter’s authors to agree on common description instead of duplication ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  21. Review Guidelines • Can an engineer not familiar with the subject use the information? • Get one to read chapter and tell you -- Don’t assume! • Be sure they suggest changes and additions to the TC subcommittee ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  22. Checklist • Is there any information that has not been included? • Is there information in the chapter that should not be there? • What is the best part of the chapter? • What is the worst part of the chapter? ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  23. Revision Guidelines • Include accepted engineering practice and current information. Place the highest priority on comprehensive technical information and good practices. ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  24. Revision Guidelines • Design data and procedures should be as simple and easy to use as possible and should be appropriate for the accuracy of data available at that point in the process. • More complex procedures should be included only if the increase in accuracy is significant enough to justify the additional effort. ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  25. Revision Guidelines • Chapters in the Applications, Refrigeration, and Systems/Equipment volumes should not contain derivations of equations or discussions of the research process. The references should include this information, if needed. References to other publications should be used when possible. ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  26. Revision Guidelines • Reference material in other chapters when possible to avoid duplication. Check the Fundamentals chapters for basic information. If the information is not complete, coordinate with the responsible TC/TG/TRG to develop the information instead of duplicating it in your chapter. ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  27. Revision Preparation • Minor Revisions • Markup paper OK • Track changes if electronic • Major Revisions/New Chapters • Electronic • Hard copy ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  28. Style guidelines • Figures • Tables • Units • References and bibliography • Examples ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  29. Outlines • Help you decide what information • Fundamentals • Applications • Systems and Equipment • Refrigeration ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  30. Submission • Chapter approval Checklist • Result of TC vote • Proof reviewer • Contributors • What to include • Where ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  31. Timetable -- Traditional • The first Society meeting following the publication of the book • Example: 2004 Systems/Equipment • Book published June 1, 2004. • Review starts in the fall of 2004. ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  32. Timetable -- Traditional • The TC has approximately three years to update material and insert new technical content before submittal for publication • Example: 2004 Systems/Equipment -- final revisions Spring 2007 ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee

  33. Timetable -- eBook • Yearly -- Revisions due Feb 1 • Parts of chapter • errata • minor upgrades • new sections • remove outdated material ASHRAE Society Handbook Committee
