  1. RAINFORESTS All about rainforests and what we can do to help protect them!

  2. Why are they called rainforests? • Because they are wet! Tropical rainforests are defined by their wet and dry seasons. Tropical rainforests receive between 140 – 400 inches of rain each year.

  3. What does a rainforest look like? • There are hundreds of different plant and animal species in a tropical rainforest. A tropical rainforest consists of four layers: the emergent trees, canopy, the understory, and the forest floor.

  4. How do humans depend on rainforests? • Rainforests are essential-not just to those who live in or near them, but to everyone on the whole planet. They help control the world's climate. Many of our medicines come from plants that grow in rainforests.

  5. Can a rainforest grow back once it has been destroyed? • A rainforest cannot be replaced. Rainforests have been evolving for 70 – 100 million years and contain plants and animals that live nowhere else on earth! Click above to return to first slide

  6. What can we do to protect rainforests?

  7. Use less paper! • We can recycle paper and use less paper, too. Try taking a lunch box or canvass bag for your school lunch instead of using a paper or plastic bag.

  8. Use less gasoline and plastic! • Gasoline and plastic are made from petroleum or oil and oil extraction is very harmful to the rainforests. Try carpooling, riding your bike, using public transportation and walking more.

  9. Write a letter! • Writing letters to the presidents of companies, or corporations, that destroy the rainforest is a very powerful thing to do. Unfortunately, there are many corporations that destroy the rainforest by logging the trees, drilling for oil, or using rainforest beef in their products.

  10. Plant a tree! • Trees clean the air and water and help to keep the planet cool. They help build up rich soil, create shade and provide food and shelter for humans and animals.

  11. Go for a hike! • Getting out and enjoying nature is good for you. Going for a hike is also great exercise. Hiking is a safe and healthy activity to enjoy with your family.

  12. Your actions can change the world! • Your actions make a difference in the world! You have the power to protect our forests for the future! • Check out http://www.rainforestweb.org for more information on rainforests or Rainforest Heroes to read about what other kids have done to help the rainforests.
