  6. DILATORY Part of Speech: ADJECTIVE Definition: TARDY, LATE, UNHURRIED, SLUGGISH Arlene is a notoriously dilatory student.

  7. LAPSE Part of Speech: VERB Definition: TO BECOME VOID, INVALID OR TO RUN OUT; EXPIRE I was not able to get to the meter in time after the time I had paid for lapsed and I was rewarded with a ticket.

  8. INSISTENT Part of Speech: ADJECTIVE Definition: EMPHATIC OR DWELLING UPON; PERSISTENT OR DETERMINED When I was at Sepulveda and Culver, a guy came up and washed my windows even though I told him no. He then became insistent that I pay him for the job.

  10. TUMULT Part of Speech: NOUN Definition: A loud, confused noise especially one created by a large mass of people The running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain is a tradition that is usually surrounded by tumult, chaos and excitement.

  11. PORTENTOUS Part of Speech: ADJECTIVE Definition: Provoking amazement OR PREDICTIVE OF an important outcome It was certainly a portentous moment for the young director who was up for an academy award; this moment would alter his future forever.

  12. IRREVERENT Part of Speech: ADJECTIVE Definition: SHOWING LACK OF RESPECT FOR PEOPLE OR THINGS THAT ARE GENERALLY RESPECTED Some may argue that the irreverent entertainment in the US is disrespectful; I would argue that at least it gets the American public’s attention to the issues.

  15. Gatsby Chapter 6 • A Newspaper man comes in from the city to get the story on Gatsby: The mysterious man behind the parties. • Nick decides to tell the truth about Gatsby. All of this information is told in hindsight. • This is how the audience gets to hear the truth.

  16. Gatsby Chapter 6 • Previously, Gatsby’s name was: James Gatz • Everything changed for Gatsby when he met Dan Cody, a drunk yacht owner. • Gatsby spent the next five years as Cody’s steward, mate, skipper, and best friend.

  17. Gatsby Chapter 6 • Dan Cody’s excessive drinking is thought to be why Gatsby does not drink. • When Dan Cody passed, he willed his fortune to Gatsby, but this effort was thwarted when a mistress intervened.

  18. Gatsby Chapter 6 • Gatsby and Nick are lounging when Tom, a man named Sloane and a brunette drop in unexpectedly. • During this interaction, we see that Gatsby has become more brazen with Tom and that he is also socially very unaware. • Tom and Gatsby’s dislike for each other is solidified.

Gatsby Chapter 6 • A week later Tom, Daisy and Nick go to Gatsby’s party. • Nick notes that the general atmosphere is hostile, drunk and uncouth: a departure from the usual jovial feeling. • Daisy gives Tom her gold pencil in case he needs to write anything down (a number for a new mistress perhaps?)

  20. Gatsby Chapter 6 • After a brief, private moment together on Nick’s porch, Gatsby and Daisy separate • As Tom begins to feel more and more threatened by Gatsby; he becomes determined to find out where Gatsby’s wealth comes from and to out Gatsby.
