  1. DT News • The Insertable B-layer (IBL) project for the ATLAS Upgrade • Raphael Vuillermet, François-Xavier Nuiry and Christophe Bault  DTScience-Techno Tea 14 May 2012

  2. DT Personnel • Staff and fellow movements during the past 6 months • Recruited electronics technician. FlorentinaManolescu(RO), Section DT/DI, Bond lab and QART lab. • Recruited nuclear engineer Federico Ravotti (IT) (anticipated replacement of M. Glaser), mainly Irradiation Facility operation and upgrade. • Recruited mechanical engineer Corrado Gargiulo (IT)(replacement of Diego Perini). Section DT/PO. Started 1 Dec 2011. Practically 100% on ALICE. • Recruited mechanical technician Maurice Vergain (FR). Section DT/EM2. Started 1 April 2012. Mainly ATLAS nSQP (+ NA62). • LD job (2 yrs) opened for cooling engineer (CMS related, EU financed). Board soon. • LD job (5 yrs) opened cooling controls engineer. Board in 1-2 months • LD job (5 yrs) opened for mechanical designer. Replacement Eric David. Board in a few weeks. • LD job (5 yrs) opened for mechanical designer. Initially detached to ATLAS. Board in a few weeks. • New fellow: Eraldo Oliveri (IT). Started 1 April 2012. Gas detector R&D, RD51. Supervisor L. Ropelewski. • Several new PhD + Tech students: Beatrice Mandelli, HannesNeugebauer, MaciejOstrega • ... + many stagiaires.

  3. DT Personnel • Retirements / End of contract • Hans Taureg: 28.2.2012 • Eric David: 8 May 2012 • Marie Curie Fellow Marco Villa: 30 Nov 2011 • Marie Curie Fellow Nicola Pacifico: 31 Dec 2011 • Fellow Irena Dolenc: 30 March 2012 • Fellow Sorin Martoiu: 30 March 2012

  4. DT Personnel • Change of activity / additional activity • Nicolas Bourgeois works part time on Irradiation Facility, electromechanical support (M. Glaser, F. Ravotti), maintaining his role in magnet controls team. • Adrian Folley, detached from DT to EN/MME. Started officially on 1 Feb 2012. • 1.1.2012: Mar Capeans and Andrea Catinaccio replaced Ferdi Hahn and Antti Onnela as Deputy Group Leaders. • Mar will take over as DT Group Leader on 1.9.2012, with Andrea as deputy.

  5. DT MARS • All interviews completed and paper work fully done. • Competencies... Hmmm, thanks for your cooperative attitude • The new MARS form and the competency model have significantly increased the time needed to perform the interview and fill the form. • There is widespread dissatisfaction with the current MARS model and the advancement scheme in general. Major changes can only be done at the 5-yearly review (2015). Some changes (improvements?) may happen already before. • In 2012, there were no additional steps available. In addition, the directorate insisted on the rule, that 25% of staff can have a periodic step only. • Just for info: 1-step fraction in PH department = 26%. 1-step fraction in G-band = 70% (CERN wide)

  6. DT MARS • DT step proposal • sent to the department. • In addition premium proposals : • = 11000 CHF. Promotion proposals: 3 SB change Cb Cc 1 SB change Eb  Ec 1 SB change Fa  Fb 1 SB change Fb  Fc 2 CP change C  D 2 CP change E  F 1 CP change D  E All 4 are ineligible to get a step (probation period, end of band). No 0-step due to bad performance.

  7. Space • Roof of B108: Renovation is confirmed to be in the GS 2012 Consolidation Plan. Work will be done in 2012. (email B. Gossuin, 10.2.2012) • Major consolidation of B20/21/168. Currently a tender is out for the renovation of the facade. Works are supposed to take place between September 2012 and June 2013. Minor impact on the activities inside the building. • We try to recuperate some offices in B20/21 (F. Cataneo, UK Liaison) . Need space for growing cooling activity. • “B140”. Concept of a new central DT building replacing B 25, 70, 155, 166 and 187. Currently an architect (Geneva) works on a pre-study. Expect results in a few weeks. • Latest idea: use available zone (see next slide) to build 2 buildings. 1 for PH-DT, one for CERN needs in general.  We will report in a future meeting ... • CERN cars • We made an inquiry about the CERN cars pad by the DT group. We found a total of 21 cars! • Result: 1 car suppressed, 1 car transferred to NA62 budget, 2 cars transferred to gas and magnet M&O budgets. • The remaining 17 cars appear fully justified. • 4 cars less  16 kCHF per year saving on the group budget.

  8. Phasage (B. Gossuin / GS) 2012-2013 : études, financement, appel d’offre 2014 : démolition B102 2014-2016 : construction B140-EST, déménagement PH-DT 2016 : démolition B25-70-155-166-187 2016-2017 : construction B140-OUEST  B140-EST et B140-OUEST autonomes indépendamment

  9. DT Annual Report 2011 cern.ch/ph-dep-dt

  10. 35 pages on projects, services, R&D, publications, outreach... 40 photos and graphs Thanks to all of you for the excellent work described in this report ! It’s really worth to invest half an hour in reading it. Collected and edited by Mark Hatch

  11. Not to forget... A collection of technical notes written by DT staff and users.

  12. DT participates to the Swiss wide Bike To Work event Participants commit to bike to work at least every second day during the whole month of June. This is good for your health, for the environment, for your wallet, Participants are grouped in teams of 4 – This is not a competition !!! Team 1: F.Hahn, R.Guida, F.Merlet, A.Wasem Team 2: C.Joram, A.Honma, F.Bergsma, H.Boterenbrot Team 3: Matthieu Heller, ... Registration open till end of the month Hundreds of nice prices to win.... Contact Mar if you want to participate

  13. CERN relay Race A team consists of 6 runners. Each of them runs just one distance of 1000-800-800-500-500-300 metres. There are several categories like seniors, women, mixed, veterans If you would like to participate in a DT team, please contact Francisco (Francisco.Perez.Gomez@cern.ch)

  14. CERN participates to an event/exhibition at the Geneva pont de la machine about optical fibres, organized by SIG. PH/DT and PH/ESE have built a set-up demonstrating the use of fibres as particle detectors. Also a spare detector of ATLAS ALFA is exposed. Exhibition is open 7 days a week until 20 June 2012.

  15. Visit of NA62 (Prevessin site) • + group BBQ Wed 13 June, 15:30 (reserve if bad weather: 26 June)
