  2. OUR FOOD SYSTEM • Our global system is organized by some parts: • Production • Processing • Distribution • Retail • Consumption • Resource Recovery

  3. PRODUCTION • Growing and harvesting edible plants and raising animals. • CURIOSITY: • Women grow 80 per cent of staple food in Africa and only receive one per cent of the credit. • Small farmers feed 80 per cent of Africa's population but they don't earn enough to meet their owns needs.

  4. PROCESSING • Raw or fresh food is transformed into finished products ready to eat for example freezing and packaging vegetables. • CURIOSITY: • The major players in the food system are large multinational companies involved in manufacturing, processing, distribution and retail. A small number of these companies control global agribusiness.

  5. DISTRIBUTION • How food is transported, stored, and marketed on its way from grower to buyer. • CURIOSITY: Over one million people in Africa earn their living producing fruits and vegetables for the UK.

  6. RETAIL • Checking and pricing food and then selling or purchasing it. • CURIOSITY: • Supermarket account for 97% of total grocery sales in the UK. • Across the world, the price of basic food is expected to double by 2030

  7. CONSUMPTION • Cooking, preparing, and eating food. • CURIOSITY: • In developing countries, people spend up to 70% of their income in food, in the UK the 10%.

  8. RESOURCE RECOVERY • All the ways unwanted food is collected, sorted, and processed. • CURIOSITY: • In England, they throw away 3,6 millions tons of food a year, like 200000 full London buses. • One third part of food produced is wasted around the world
