    3. Problem Statement and Purpose Students enrolling in community colleges are leaving without obtaining a certificate or college degree ( Baker & Smith, 1997; Burley, Butner, & Cejeda, 2001). The current study focuses on determining the impact that a College Success Course has as a counseling intervention on student success at a South Texas Institution of Higher Education.

    4. Research Questions What is the role of the counselor at a community college? What is the overall effectiveness of counselors teaching a College Success Course as an intervention strategy from the counselor’s perspective? What is the overall effectiveness of counselors teaching a College Success Course as an intervention strategy from the student’s perspective? What is the impact of a College Success Course on emotional intelligence skills: assertion, drive strength, time management, commitment ethic, stress management, and a problem area: change orientation?

    5. Significance of the Study The research will facilitate community colleges in becoming aware of the perceptions that students and counselors have regarding the effectiveness of a College Success Course as a counseling intervention intended to improve student success skills. The study will evaluate the current college success course to explore whether the intended effect is achieved in terms of improving assertion, drive strength, time management, commitment ethic, and stress management skills. Provide insight and awareness regarding the roles of counselors in the higher education setting.
