  1. Pinning down the Nature of SN Ia progenitors We plan to probe the circum-stellar environment of intermediate red-shift Type Ia SNe through multi-epoch optical high-resolution spectroscopy, with the aim of inferring the progenitor’s nature. As a by-product, the same data will provide information about l.o.s. extinction, ISM and IGM. PI Total time #CoIs, team F. Patat 10n (ELT 42m) – ToO ~10. Expertise in SN classification, hi-res spectroscopy, ISM, IGM, photoionization, SN progenitors, PNe, PPNe, post-AGB stars

  2. Claims on an expanding universe are based on SNe Ia. But we ignore explosion mechanism and the progenitor’s nature are unknown. Before we solve these issues, no firm conclusion can be drawn, since evolutionary effects may play an important role. Progenitor’s nature has been investigated trying to find evidences for ejecta-CSM interaction. All attempts were frustrated and only upper limits to the CSM density could be set (OK, exclude extreme SSs). We propose a different channel, i.e. the search for neutral gas which, if present, should be detected through the effects of the SN variable radiation field, without the need of interaction. SN2006X: 12 hrs @VLT+UVES (Patat et al., 2006, Science).

  3. With a 42m telescope (ELT/ETC) one can do this down to Vmax~18 (z~0.1), with ~10 hrs per object (2/4 epochs according to distance; SNR~70). Immediate Objective Since for z<0.1, the relevant low ionization lines (CaII H&K, NaID, KI) are still in the optical domain, we propose to obtain optical, seeing-limited multi-epoch (spaced by weeks) hi-res (R~40,000) spectroscopy of 10 candidates in ToO service mode. Analysis of the time evolution of narrow absorption lines will give direct information about the progenitor. SN2006X – UVES – Na I D2 Patat et al. 2006

  4. ELT Justification: Verifying this with a 8m telescope would take ages (~1 good Ia /2 yrs; Vmax<14, basically Virgo-limited). Legacy Value: study of ISM and IGM. Data Reduction: DR should not be very much different from that done with the same kind of setup on a 8m-class telescope.
