  2. The Telegraph Samuel F.B. Morse introduced the Telegraph in 1844. By 1860 the U.S. had thousands of miles of telegraph lines. In 1866, a telegraph cables was laid across the Atlantic Ocean, which brought Europe and the U.S. closer together. The Telephone Alexander Graham Bell introduced the telephone in 1876. The Bell Telephone Company was formed in 1877. By the 1890’s Bell had sold nearly 500,000 phones. Communication Changes

  3. Between 1860 and 1890 the U.S. government granted 400,000 patents for new inventions. Electricity Thomas Edison developed the first light bulb in 1879. Edison built the first electric power plant in 1882 in New York City. George Westinghouse In 1885 Westinghouse built transformers that could send electricity across longer distances. Electricity was soon being used for factories, street lights and lamps. The Genius of Invention

Transportation Changes • Henry Ford • Wanted to build an inexpensive car that would last a lifetime. • Ford and Charles Sorenson developed the Model T and introduced it to the public in 1908. • Developed the – assembly line – where each worker performs a certain task again and again at a certain stage in the production of the automobile. • The assembly line revolutionized industry, allowing for the manufacturing of large quantities of goods more quickly – mass production.
