  1. INVENTIONS Parking Space Vacancy Detection Inventors: Hala Halaseh & Katy Blumer

  2. Problem… • Coming home from work by car, tired • Approach a parking lot close to home to park • And…

  3. So, you end up.. Wasting time Prone to accidents Frustrated Wasting gasoline & diesel fuel

  4. Solution!!!

  5. Materials Needed • Video Camera & Tripod • MATLAB R2011 • Weka • George!

  6. Who is my consumer? • Any driver • Government • Building owners • Parking Lot owners

  7. Solution • Put a camera at a high vantage point. • Analyze the video to determine which parking spots are full and other that are empty. • Algorithms used Color Comparison Method - Color Comparison - Edge Counting - Foreground Estimation Foreground Estimation Method

  8. What We Did • Recorded a 45 minute video of the parking lot behind Sama Tower from the 12th floor at 6 o’clock. • Recoded every parking event manually • Ran this and static image processing results through Weka • Combined Weka results with image processing

  9. Results • Algorithm not good at recognizing empty spaces Static Methods Accuracy 99.3%, Precision 65.4% Foreground Estimation Accuracy 93.4%, Precision 14.1% Combined Methods Accuracy 99.2%, Precision 63.6%

  10. Future Steps • Taking 24-hour video • Precision can be improved by training the algorithm on the section of the video that has more empty spaces • Communicating to the user by using a phone app • The phone app will also send direction of the location of the empty lot.

  11. Costs of the Project • Camera • Phone App or display • Setup of the system takes a day or so per parking lot

  12. Acknowledgment • We would like to thank George Chaidos who offered great help in writing the algorithms of the program. • We also would thank Professor NikolaosMavridis and Leonard RetelHelmrichfor giving us advice on the project throughout the working process.
