  2. Course Info. • Venue: Rm 3311 • Time: Wed 1:30-4:20pm • Instructors: Lei Chen and Ke Yi • Course Webpage: • http://www.cse.ust.hk/~leichen/courses/COMP6311D

  3. Course Outline • We will study together hot topics related with Big Data • The topics will cover: • System, Algorithms, Applications • The lecture will be delivered in two formats: • Lecture by professors • Student presentation

  4. Grading Scheme • Student presentations: 30% • Survey and Project implementation: 60% • Participation and activity in class: 10%

  5. Survey and Project • Survey Report. The report will describe the problem domain, with proper problem definition, and a survey of existing work. This should be about 30 typed pages (12pt type with single spacing). This report will be handed in at the end of the 8th week of classes. • Research Report. This report will describe your attempt to either solve a problem in this domain or go a long way towards its solution. What I minimally expect is a good solution approach such that if I gave you 2-3 more months, you could complete the solution, conduct the experiments and produce a publishable paper. This report should be about 40 typed pages, including a summary survey (i.e., a summary of part 1) of about 5 pages.

  6. Course Workload • Very heavy! • You are expecting to read 3-4 papers every week in the first few weeks and write a survey! • You need to pick up 1 paper from your reading list and present in the class. • You need to at least list several possible research directions (solutions) for your project, not necessary to implement them. Of course, if you implement them, you will get bonus.
