  1. Add & Subtract Fractions With Mixed Numbers

  2. Mixed Numbers • A mixed number has a part that is a whole number and a part that is a fraction. 3 1 = 4

  3. Mixed Numbers Shortcut to find the LCD. Will 3 divide into 6? Use 6 as your LCD. 1 10 3 6 1 3 + 6 6

  4. Mixed Numbers Now find the equivalent fractions for 1/3 & 1/6. 1 10 3 6 x 2 = 1 3 + 6 x 1 = 6 Ask what do you multiply 3 by to get 6 and what do you multiply 6 by to get 6.

  5. Mixed Numbers You are writing equivalent fractions, so fill in your Giant One. 1 x 2 = 10 3 6 x 2 = 1 x 1 = 3 + 6 x 1 = 6

  6. Mixed Numbers 1 2 Now multiply across. x 2 = 10 3 6 x 2 = 1 1 x 1 = 3 + 6 x 1 = 6

  7. Mixed Numbers 1 2 Add numerators. x 2 = 10 3 6 x 2 = 1 1 x 1 = 3 + 6 x 1 = 6 3 6

  8. Mixed Numbers 1 2 Add whole numbers. x 2 = 10 3 6 x 2 = 1 1 x 1 = 3 + 6 x 1 = 6 3 13 6

  9. Mixed Numbers Simplify Your Answer ÷ 3 1 13 3 13 = 6 ÷ 3 2

  10. Mixed Numbers Find the least common denominator for 5 and 3 4 11 5 15 1 2 + 3 15

  11. Mixed Numbers Ask yourself what you multiply the denominator by to get 15. 4 11 5 15 x 3 = 1 2 + 3 x 5 = 15

  12. Mixed Numbers 4 11 x 3 = Fill in your giant one. 5 15 x 3 = 1 x5= 2 + 3 x 5 = 15

  13. Mixed Numbers Multiply straight across. 4 12 11 x 3 = 5 15 x 3 = 1 5 x5 = 2 + 3 x 5 = 15

  14. Mixed Numbers Add the Numerators. Denominator stays the same. 4 12 11 x 3 = 5 15 x 3 = 1 5 x5 = 2 + 3 x 5 = 15 17 15

  15. Mixed Numbers 2 1 4 12 11 x 3 = 15 5 15 x 3 = 15) 17 1 5 x5 = 2 + 15 3 x 5 = 15 2 17 15 IMPROPER

  16. Mixed Numbers Add Your 1 to Your Whole Numbers 1 2 1 4 12 11 x 3 = 15 5 15 x 3 = 15) 17 1 5 x5 = 2 + 15 3 x 5 = 15 2 17 15 IMPROPER

  17. Mixed Numbers Put remainder fraction by answer 1 2 1 4 12 11 x 3 = 15 5 15 x 3 = 15) 17 1 5 x5 = 2 + 15 3 x 5 = 15 2 17 2 14 15 15 IMPROPER
